It was Monday afternoon and Stacey had just come in out of the
rain. Her coat was wet and her boots made a squishing sound as she
walked into the kitchen. It was nearly winter and the sky was cloudy
and gray. Her brother, Zach, sat at the kitchen table eating a snack. He had his soggy
shoes on still and his soles were muddy. Just then, the door opened and a wet, shaggy
dog hurdled into the kitchen. Mrs. Mayer followed behind the dog dripping wet. Usually
Mrs. Mayer had a smile on her face, but right then she was not smiling.
“I’m glad you are both here.” She said. “Someone trampled my flowers today. I know
it is easy to take a short cut through the flowers to the front door but I have asked you
many times not to walk through them. If you are responsible for my trampled flowers,
please speak up now. We will not go to the movies tonight until we solve the mystery.”
