Assignments
Class Assignment
During the semester, exercises will be assigned, some for completion in class and some for
completion at home. They may be designated as individual tasks or as group work. These
exercises contribute 25% to the total mark. Details will be provided in class for each exercise.
If you are not in class when an exercise is assigned, you will receive a mark of 0. If you
provide prior notice of absence, you will be given an opportunity to make up the missed
exercise.
Quizzes
A random set of question will be available to students through the course Desire2Learn (D2L)
online VIU’s Learning Management System (LMS). The quizzes are an opportunity to assess
student’s knowledge on the material before the exam. Please note that the questions are
not the same as will be on the test, but cover the same material. Access to D2L is accessible
via the Internet from the URL: https://d2l.viu.ca/
Quizzes will be available one week prior to their due date (same date as the test), so for Quiz
1 with a due date of 6-Oct will be available beginning 29-Sep. Access to the quiz will only be
available in the window between the open date (1 week prior to due date) and the date it is
due. Please note in D2L the times it is available as the quizzes open and close at noon, so for
example Quiz 1 will not be available at 1pm on 6-Oct. Hence, no last minute quizzing before
the exam!
Tests
There will be three tests, worth 30% of the total mark; these tests are not cumulative and
cover the preceding material as identified in the course schedule below.
No special arrangements will be made to allow students to write the exams at alternate
times unless for extenuating circumstances (e.g. Illness – requires doctor’s certificate).
If you miss an examination without prior authorization, you will receive a mark of 0 for the
exam!
Briefing Report
Students are to create a brief written report (around 1500 words) that is based on Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) covered in week 4. The report is a business situation that the
student will make a recommendation to an organization with the support details from the
student’s findings. Additional detail will be discussed in the lecture covering the topic on
week 4.
Research Report
Students will be given a substantial written assignment (approximately 2500 words) that will
require significant research and use multiple topics covered in the course. Additional detail
will be discussed in the lecture on week 7.
DEADLINES
Subject to VIU policy, a student missing the assignment dates (more than 3 days) or any of
the tests without prior authorization and for a justifiable reason, will receive a mark of 0.
Justifiable reasons included family emergencies (health related), illness (requires a doctor’s
note), or similar serious event that can be documented. Assignments will receive a penalty
of 10% per day for 3 days, but after 3 days will receive a mark of 0.
