"C" in English 12 and min "C+" in one of Principles of Math 11, Applications of Math 11, or Foundations of Math 11 Course Description An examination of the process of achieving organizational goals through the use of strategic and operational strategies involving the four major management functions: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Course Overview Management 192 is an introductory core course for all Business Program students. The course introduces students to the principles, knowledge and skills used to manage successfully in organizations. Through lecture, discussion, case studies, group work and activities, students will explore the theories and practical application of management to achieve organizational and individual goals. Topics include the contemporary context for management (including ethics, globalization and technology), and the key management functions of planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Learning Outcomes 1. Fundamental Concepts Demonstrate understanding of the fundamental concepts and theories of management practice. 2. Critical Thinking Analyze and evaluate relevant management problems within the context of the course. Apply fundamental theoretical concepts to solve relevant management problems within the context of the course. 3. Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, giving and receiving information during any test or exam, using unauthorized sources of information during any test; plagiarizing; fabricating, cheating, and, misrepresenting the work of another person as your own, facilitation of academic misconduct, and under certain conditions, non-attendance. Plagiarism, intentional or not, will not be tolerated. You must reference your work and acknowledge sources with in-text citations and a complete list of references. This includes direct and indirect quotes, diagrams, charts, figures, pictures and written material. For group projects, responsibility for academic integrity, which can result in academic misconduct and its resulting penalties, rests with each person in the group and sanctions would be borne by each member. The complete policies are located online at: http://www.viu.ca/policies/policies-index.asp No calculators, electronic dictionaries, cell phones or other electronic devices will be allowed in exams/tests/quizzes. If required, only the following approved calculators may be used in exams/tests/quizzes: Texas Instrument BAII Plus, BAII, BA35; Sharp EL-733A, and HP 10B. No other materials will be allowed on the desktop apart from a pen/pencil unless specifically approved by the faculty member. Assignments Class Assignment During the semester, exercises will be assigned, some for completion in class and some for completion at home. They may be designated as individual tasks or as group work. These exercises contribute 25% to the total mark. Details will be provided in class for each exercise. If you are not in class when an exercise is assigned, you will receive a mark of 0. If you provide prior notice of absence, you will be given an opportunity to make up the missed exercise. Quizzes A random set of question will be available to students through the course Desire2Learn (D2L) online VIU’s Learning Management System (LMS). The quizzes are an opportunity to assess student’s knowledge on the material before the exam. Please note that the questions are not the same as will be on the test, but cover the same material. Access to D2L is accessible via the Internet from the URL: https://d2l.viu.ca/ Quizzes will be available one week prior to their due date (same date as the test), so for Quiz 1 with a due date of 6-Oct will be available beginning 29-Sep. Access to the quiz will only be available in the window between the open date (1 week prior to due date) and the date it is due. Please note in D2L the times it is available as the quizzes open and close at noon, so for example Quiz 1 will not be available at 1pm on 6-Oct. Hence, no last minute quizzing before the exam! Tests There will be three tests, worth 30% of the total mark; these tests are not cumulative and cover the preceding material as identified in the course schedule below. No special arrangements will be made to allow students to write the exams at alternate times unless for extenuating circumstances (e.g. Illness – requires doctor’s certificate). If you miss an examination without prior authorization, you will receive a mark of 0 for the exam! Briefing Report Students are to create a brief written report (around 1500 words) that is based on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) covered in week 4. The report is a business situation that the student will make a recommendation to an organization with the support details from the student’s findings. Additional detail will be discussed in the lecture covering the topic on week 4. Research Report Students will be given a substantial written assignment (approximately 2500 words) that will require significant research and use multiple topics covered in the course. Additional detail will be discussed in the lecture on week 7. DEADLINES Subject to VIU policy, a student missing the assignment dates (more than 3 days) or any of the tests without prior authorization and for a justifiable reason, will receive a mark of 0. Justifiable reasons included family emergencies (health related), illness (requires a doctor’s note), or similar serious event that can be documented. Assignments will receive a penalty of 10% per day for 3 days, but after 3 days will receive a mark of 0.
