Photosynthesis What do you think life would be like if plants did not make their own food? Photosynthesis is necessary for life on Earth. Humans and animals require oxygen to live. Oxygen comes into the atmosphere as a result of photosynthesis, and oxygen is in the air we breathe. All living things benefit from photosynthesis. Plants use photosynthesis to make the food they need to live and grow. Animals either eat plants to obtain energy or eat other animals that ate plants. Energy moves from the Sun, to plants, to animals. Photosynthesis is necessary for that energy flow. Humans and animals need oxygen to survive. Plant leaves absorb energy from the Sun to make food. The leaves provide food for animals to eat, and plants give off oxygen that we breathe. 2
