Name _______________________________________________ Date ________________________ Sci 7 - ___
Energy is needed to make something happen; Energy is the capacity or power to do work.
There are many forms of energy:
1) heat/ thermal
2) chemical
3) light/ radiant
4) stored mechanical
5) sound
6) nuclear
7) electrical
8) gravitational
9) motion/ movement
10) *solar (thermal and radiant)
Most of these forms of energy can be placed under 2 headings
A. Kinetic energy (KE) - energy in motion, moving atoms, movement is involved
B. Potential energy (PE) - energy which is stored, it could be based on an object’s height or position
Complete the Energy Circus first (on the next page).
When finished, answer the following questions.
1) How does your body store energy?
2) Your body contains many forms of kinetic energy. Write down as many as you can think of.
3) Pick out 5 items from this picture and
list what types of energy are used or
are present.

Energy Circus - Transfer of Energy
You will need to find common household items around the house to help you with this lab. The instructions
for each experiment are written below. Please use safety precautions when doing these minilabs. Perform,
research, or observe a demonstration of each mini lab and record your results in the table below: (Identify
the types of energy involved as well as the transfer of energy. You must indicate what type(s) of energy it is
and if that type of energy is PE or KE.
Stations
Initial Energy Form(s)
Energy Transferred to these
Energy Form(s)
Station 1: Rolling Marble
Roll a Marble down a ramp. (Be
creative with what you use as your
ramp.)
Gravitational (PE)
Heat/thermal (KE)
Motion (KE)
Station 2: Electrical Circuit
Use a battery powered flashlight or a
similar item that uses batteries and
has a light or lights.
Chemical (PE)
Electrical (KE) → Thermal and
radiant (heat and light) (KE)
Station 3: Solar Cell (Demo)
research what a solar panel (or
photovoltaic (PV) cell) does to collect
& convert energy from the sun.
Chemical (PE) → Solar (KE)/
Light (KE)
Electrical → Sound (KE),
Light(KE), Heat (KE)
Station 4: Magnesium Flare
DEMO by teacher! Magnesium strip lit
by a bunsen burner
Chemical (PE)
Heat/Thermal (KE),
Light/Radiant (KE)
Station 5: Acid Fizz
Take the antacid tablet from the
science kit and put it in a clear cup
with 10 mL of vinegar, if no vinegar use
water.
Chemical (PE)
Motion (KE), Heat (KE), Sound
(KE)
Station 6: Vibrations/Tuning Fork Watch as a tuning fork sends waves
through the water (video link)
Motion (KE)
Sound (KE), Motion (KE)
Station 7: Slingshot
Take a strip of paper & use a rubber
band to create a slingshot to send the
paper flying.
