Who? What? When? Where? How? Students will also communicate amongst one another using
the following questions to obtain information from one another about their cultures.
Materials and preparation:
Video on the 5w’s, journals, pencils.
Key terms:
5w’s
Culture
Introduction:
Inform students that today’s lesson will consist of them getting to know their peers by utilizing
the 5w’s. Inform the students that they will watch a video explaining these concepts and how
they are to be used. After the video I will ask students a question about what they’ve learned
about both the 5w’s and cultures.
Beginning:
Show students the video and ask three random students what they’ve learned.
Essential Questions:
● What is one thing you learned about another classmate's culture?
● How does your culture differ from one of your classmate’s cultures?
● Using one of the 5w’s, formulate a question about one of your classmates' cultures.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling
Show students how to formulate their own questions using the 5 W's: who, what, when, where,
and how.
I will use characters that students are familiar with such as spongebob, and ask questions like
Who is Spongebob? What do you think Spongebob's culture consists of ? Where does
Spongebob live? How does Spongbob express his values and beliefs?
Independent working time:
I will pair students up according to their culture, I will try to be sure that each student is with
someone of another culture.
Students will begin to ask each other questions about one another using the 5w’s, students are
required to write questions and answers to their journals.
Assessment:
Collect students journals and review to be sure students understood both the 5w’s and culture.
Review and closing
Review the main aspects of a question (asking word, question mark) once again.
Have students answer one of the three exit ticket questions.

Using one of the 5w’s, formulate a question about one of your classmates' cultures.
The changes I made within this lesson is implementing knowledge about the 5w’s “Who? What?
When? Where? How? and helping students to learn of different cultures. I want my students to
be exposed to different cultures and have an understanding that everyone is unique in their
own way. I want students to be interested in learning about different places in the world and
how individuals interact within different cultures.
