Chapter I
Introduction
Tourism can be defined as travelling to a place which is different from your home
city or country for various leisure or business purposes, and staying there for some
considerable period of time at a length. It is travelling for some purpose and for stay
which is not very long or permanent in nature.
Tourism becomes an activity which builds the base for the wide scale
consumption bringing far reaching benefits. Tourism gains importance as an activity
which has far reaching positive impacts on industries, economy, society and therefore
for the whole growth, progress and development of a country. The definition of tourism
also creates the foundation and the broad context of the tourism industry through which
most of the advantages and benefits are received by the country as a whole. Tourism
industry is actually a large group of these industries which provide range of products
4 | Page
and services aimed at serving tourism and the needs of travelers or visitors. This group
or chain also indicates towards and brings us to the value chain of tourism industry.
Tourism as one of the fundamental and inherent human rights is inseparable
from his essence and there has been emphasis in the Holy Quran for people to enjoy it.
The international documents and organizations also have recognized it as a right for
humans and countries need to recognize it as their own domestic laws and regulations
formulated to provide its implementation.
Tourism phenomenon which itself is a socio-cultural phenomenon refers to the
mobility of people. The accelerated growth has caused many scholars of 20th century,
to call it the century of tourism. Experience has proved that tourism always involves
economic, environmental and social impact. The main pillars of the tourism and the
natural attractions such as mountains, rivers and lake have made the tourists and
travelers to travel to a specific destination.
In the meantime, tourists of ecotourism have often environmental tendency and
can play an important role in refining and protecting environment, and also developing
the environmental culture among the people.
Careful attention to the limited natural resources and having a sense of social
responsibility towards the host society and culture that are influenced by the industry is
among the factors that are important in terms of boosting the tourism industry. In
general, when tourism industry and travel are planned and managed in an appropriate
way, the advantages of non-economic benefits such as the preservation of culture and
environment and the maintenance of peace will be provided within.
5 | Page
Importance of tourism arises from the numerous benefits and advantages it
brings to any host country. But real importance of tourism comes from its nature and
how it is defined & structured. And this is what we will explain here. Tourism contributes
towards complete growth and development of a country: one, by bringing numerous
economic value & benefits; and, second, helping in build country's brand value, image &
identity. Tourism industry goes beyond attractive destinations, to being an important
economic growth contributor.
This understanding only will build the basis to know and understand economic
value & importance of tourism. We will know how tourism plays such a significant role
for countries, economies and its significance for wide scale growth and development. It
is an activity; it is an industry and an important growth driver for a country, its economy
and also for its social progress and monitoring. Tourism no doubt brings with it
tremendous economic value for a country. It touches and impacts several industries
directly and many more indirectly through tourism spend. Tourism is one of the
important sources of employment generation and foreign exchange earnings for a
country. Due to all this tourism gains much more economic importance for any country.
The famous proverb that says: "Tourism is like fireworks. In this way it is able to obtain
food for home or to burn it. So in this context, we are going to examine the effects of
tourism on the environment.

History
The original 800 farmer-fishermen settlers of the area were good at threshing rice
after harvest. Hence they were referred to as “mga taga-giik,” and their settlement as
“pook ng mga taga-giik.” Spanish friar Fray Alonso de Alvarado, together with
conquistador Rey Lopez de Villalobos who crossed Pasig River to reach Taguig in 1571
found “taga-giik” difficult to pronounce, and could only produce the word sounding like
“tagui-ig.” So many mispronouncements later, “tagui-ig” was shortened to the present
day “Taguig.”
Before Taguig came to be, there was this settlement under the Kingdom of
Tondo with a population counting 800 farmers and fishermen, believed to be mixed with
Chinese settlers as revealed by archaeological artifacts like glasses, cups, porcelain
plates and utensils bearing Chinese characters dug in the area.
Spain subjugated the islands in 1571, and in 1582, the Spanish rulers formally
recognized the settlement as a part of the Encomienda Del Tondo and placed it under
the headship of an Alcalde Mayor, Captain Vergara, who ruled it up to 1583.
8 | Page
On April 25, 1587, the settlement, already known as Taguig, and comprising of
nine (9) barrios, was decreed a pueblo or town of the province of Manila and placed
under Kapitan Juan Basi.
On March 29, 1 900, General Order No. 4 proclaimed Taguig as an independent
municipality. It was subsequently incorporated as part of Rizal Province on June 11,
1901. Two years after, Taguig, Muntinlupa, and Pateros were merged by virtue of
Philippine Commission Act No. 942 with Taguig hosting the seat of the municipal
government. The merger lasted but a month as Muntinlupa was separated from it and
made part of Biñan by virtue of Act No. 1008 enacted in November 25, 1903. It was
merged with Taguig and Pateros again in March 22, 1905 with the promulgation of Act
No. 1308. On February 29, 1908, Taguig, with Pateros, was declared an independent
Municipality through Executive Order No. 20. On January 1, 1918, Taguig and Pateros
separated and became independent municipalities of Rizal Province.
In the 1970s, Taguig’s political subdivision was changed to eighteen (18)
barangays following the nationwide implementation of the Integrated Reorganization
Plan.
On November 7, 1975, P.D. No. 824 carved out Taguig from the province of
Rizal and made it part of the National Capital Region. On December 8, 1998, Republic
Act No. 8487 was enacted which converted the Municipality of Taguig into a Highly
Urbanized City. A plebiscite was conducted the following year which showed that the
citizens were against it. A petition seeking for a recount was granted by the Supreme
Court on February 19, 2004. The recount showed that majority of Taguig’s voters
9 | Page
favored converting the Municipality of Taguig into a City. Subsequently, Taguig officially
became a City on December 8, 2004.
In 2008, the Taguig City council enacted City Ordinances Nos. 24-27, 57-61,
67-69, and 78, Series of 2008 which created ten (10) new barangays, carving them out
from the initial 18 barangays. Hence, in December 2008, after a successful plebiscite,
Taguig was politically subdivided into 28 barangays.

Street art or public art is a big part of urban culture. Unlike art you find in
museums, this kind of media staged in the streets, walkways and buildings make art
more accessible to the public.
Certain places around the world like George Town in Penang and Sao Paolo
in Brazil are known for their vibrant street art, which is a big tourism draw in itself. Just
check out this list of the best cities in the World for Street Art. In the Philippines, one of
the best places to see big scale public art is Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig.
The murals you can spot around BGC by international and local artists are
products of yearly ArtBGC festivals organized by the Bonifacio Arts Foundation (BAFI)
in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) district which they started in 2015.
If it’s your first time in Manila and you have a couple of hours to spare or are looking for
something free and Instagram-worthy, the area is worth visiting. I think they add a bit of

character to otherwise boring malls and public spaces. The murals are also popular

Sta. Anang Banak Taguig River Festival
The festival is a grand fluvial parade in honor and devotion to the patroness
Saint Anne. The Sta. Anang Banak annual river festival rises from a wide spectrum of
traditionally religious, yet culturally folk and mythical beliefs and practices that make up
the unique ethnic base of the people once called "taga-giik".
The festival is kept alive by a four-century-old legend of the miracle of the
"banak" fishes that happened every July for countless years. The faith tells the town's
patroness St. Anne gathered thousand of schools of Banak fishes in the river near her
church to give to the "taga-giiks" and the people on the lakeshore towns whose
farmlands are drenched with the floods of the season and are hard up due to poor
harvest from stormy seas. Every part of the legend is highlighted in the festivals
events.

"Pagodahan"
With the fish cone streamers aloft and flying, the revelers board their bancas the
band start playing, and the Pagoda of the Patroness St. Anne leads the fluvial parade.
From a special wharf behind St. Anne's Church, the Pagoda goes up all the way to the
mouth (wawa) of Laguna de Bay and returns down to Ususan. A fluvial parade of what
is used to be; people from all cultural backgrounds coming in themed boats depicting
the culture and stations in life to join the river festival in honor of St. Anne, the giver of
the fish banak.
There is exciting exchange of gifts called "Pasubo", people in the pagoda and
the revelers at the riverbanks toss or throw to each other gifts of fruits and food items
like boiled eggs, balut, itlog na maalat, and various kinds of native delicacies. Be alert
or be surprised with an apple crashing to your head.

"Pandangguhan"
Just as soon as the fluvial parade participants touch ground, the dancing
procession of the image of St. Anne automatically starts, sending one and all to the
sway of music or to catch more pasubo gifts from happy homeowners along the major
streets of the parish. Devotees in native costumes dance to the music of the
pandanggo or the wasiwas depicting how women light the riverbanks to guide their
fishermen home. The general public is free to join the fun with or without the candles or
lamps.

SWOT ANALYSIS
(Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats)
Strength.
1. The city of Taguig is the most advanced and modernized city in the country.
The master plan received an award in the USA’s 1997 Gold Nugget Award for
Best Community/Town Site Plan with a land area covering over 500 acres.
Taguig offers newer and more modern commercial office buildings to locate your
business in. More and more multinational corporations are establishing their
headquarters in Taguig. In 2003, The Ayala Corporation through Ayala Land, Inc.,
and Evergreen Holdings, Inc. of the Campos Group purchased a controlling stake in
BLDC from Metro Pacific and is now in control of the planning in Bonifacio Global
City.
2. The city of Taguig offers malls, museums and galleries as their attractions but
also, the city offers a lot of great tourist attractions.
For example the Venice Grand Canal in McKinley hill. The Grand Canal always
attracts a lot of tourist because of its gondola ride. Another great tourist spot is the
Bonifacio High Street. By combining nature and modern architecture this place sure
attracts people who are looking for a pretty spots in metro manila.
3. Endless options for food, shopping, and nightlife.
BGC’s myriad of restaurants, high-end boutiques, and popular stores will satisfy
even the most discerning of people. Listing the best places would be futile, as every
41 | Page
street in BGC has at least one. As far as bars and clubs are concerned, anyone
who’s anyone can be found in one of BGC’s clubs once the sun goes down.
4. World–c lass facilities.
From St. Lukes Medical Center to top schools like British School Manila and
(soon) the country’s top universities, Taguig will be home to the crème de la crème
of everything Metro Manila has to offer, apart from all the hotels and condominium
buildings it already has.
5. Metro Manila’s bustling business centers.
More and more businesses are either opening or making their move to Taguig.
From restaurants to high-end boutiques, business process outsourcing centers to
corporate headquarters for local and international companies.

Weaknesses.
1. Extremely pricey.
Taguig probably has one of, if not the highest standards of living in Metro Manila.
Meals can easily go for as much as P300 per person, while shopping options are
usually limited to boutiques. If you’re comfortable with malls, budget options are
available at Market! Market!, which houses fast food chains and bargain shops, as
well as a fully-stocked grocery.
2. Transport system can be confusing.
Since most people are used to the public transport system along EDSA. This is
why you will see people walk around Taguig, or take a cab. Taguig’s transport
system is similar to big cities like Singapore or New York, where everything is
scheduled, so it can take some time to get used to.
3. BGC is not commuter-friendly.
Highly-urbanized cities are known for their congestion and traffic. BGC has
mitigated these concerns via pedestrian-friendly streets and by having its own public
transportation system. BGC buses have three routes that cover the entire district:
BGC Central, East Route and West Route.
Commuters still have the option to ride jeepneys in BGC, but are limited to
certain routes to avoid clogging up populated areas like Bonifacio High Street and
Serendra. There are traffic enforcers, traffic signs and CCTV cameras installed in
almost every corner to ensure that city rules are being followed. At night,
professionals in the business process outsourcing industry or those who work in odd
hours feel confident to walk to their offices because of ample street lighting.
4. Taguig property comes in with expensive real estate tax and other fees.
43 | Page
The notion of Taguig properties being sold at high prices also comes with the
presumption that they would also come with high real estate taxes and other fees.
Broker and blogger Jun Sanchez said that costs that home buyers need to account
for when buying a new home, like Documentary Stamps Tax and home loan fees,
usually amount to 3.5% of the property price.
However, property owners can always look forward to the city’s low tax rates and
incentives. The city government of Taguig, which has already been commended for
their low taxes when compared to other cities like Makati and Mandaluyong, has
expressed earlier in online news that they do not plan to increase real estate taxes
for both residential and commercial properties anytime soon.
Second district of Taguig Councilor Aurelio Paulo Bartolome said that the move
was the city government’s strategy to attract more business in the city. Moreover,
homeowners by law could get up to a 20% discount off from their real estate taxes if
they pay ahead of the deadline.
Opportunities.
1. Job Opportunities
44 | Page
Taguig has a lot of job opportunity for people who are looking for jobs. The city
also offers a lot of different jobs for people. Taguig is also a place where you can
start a business without a problem.
2. Ideal Business Destination
Taguig is rapidly developing into an industrial and progressive city and gaining
popularity as an ideal business destination in Metro Manila; this is an opportunity for
the businessman’s to build their own businesses. It is also an accessible place to
premiere business centers.
Threats.
45 | Page
Here in taguig but not just in taguig there are many threats you can or can’t
expect for example bomb threats and car accidents. You can never expect those things
to come.
1. Increases Criminality Incidence
The increasing of criminality incidence in Taguig is unpredictable, Taguig have so
much job opportunities and also many rich people live in this area and almost all the
perpetrators knows what kind of people live in Taguig.
2. Intense competition
There's always an intense competition in the workplace, more job
opportunities more competitors to come. As the city grows more popularity more
of the business man will invest and more competitors they will have.
3. Shortage of skilled workforce
There is a business that in certain global market represents a threat to
steady growth of profits for BGC Partners in those markets. The shortage may
occur because of lack of proper payment and because of incompetence of the
business owner.

Recommendation
After the study, the researchers have drawn the following recommendations:
1. Recommendation we, the researchers, are recommending to go to taguig City
for you to see the beauty in this city and also to promote and appreciate the
Manila's ProBinsyudad type of living. Also for them to experience the beauty
that this city can offer. Since Taguig City has a lot of tourist attractions such
as The Mind Museum, KidZania Manila, Manila American Cemetery, and so
on, the city should strengthen the safety and security of locals especially the
tourist since some may take advantage of them. Also, they should provide
clearer and specific guide on how to go from one spot to another for an easier
travelling and they can make the most out of their time especially for those
who's not familiar with the city and chose to explore it alone.
2. The researchers, also recommend this city if you have business or planning
to have a business, Taguig City is a best option for businesses this is a great
opportunity to start.
3. Taguig should improve their roads and make the city more accesible to those
who are far away from the city. The city should also fix the squater side of the
city, make it more attractive or appealing to eye of the people.
