2
Make a symbols map - without using the book
or any notes, use plain A4 paper and different
coloured pens to produce a map of important
symbols and how they relate to the
themes/characters in the novel. You can have
quotes, and then a maximum of 50 extra words
as subheadings/ keywords etc. Everything else
must be symbols, numbers, abbreviations etc.
This helps anchor your brain to different
‘prompts’ for what you want to articulate
through visual stimulus. It also helps
you to make connections between
characters, events and themes in the
novel.
3
Re-familiarise yourselves with Japanese SHC,
values and beliefs by revising the information
on these slides, and working your way through
the activities.
SHC is a specifically assessed
objective for both the extract and the
whole novel essay questions. Be as
familiar with it as you can get!

More Revision Tasks
Read the information on SHC, Mishima, characters,
themes, quote analysis, chapter summaries etc. on
Gradesaver and LitCharts. If you’ve already
previously read them both - read them again!
This will deepen your knowledge of the
novel, and give you an analytical rather
than a plot driven understanding.
Practice your skills by fully answering Past Papers,
using the correct timings.
The past papers have exactly the same
layout as the paper you will sit - the
wording and the style of the questions
will also be very similar. Trying to
answer the questions using the correct
timihgs will help develop your exam
technique and time management.
Re-read the novel again before your mock exam.
Each time you read you understand the
plot, characters and themes more
deeply. You also spot more and more
connections. This increases the level of
sophistication of your understanding.
Read it AT LEAST one more time before your real
exam.
