COURSE SYLLABUS
SUBJECT: Biology 10
Grade Level: X MIA 1 and X MIA 2
Period: Second Semester
Subject Description:
The approach and topics of this subject enables students to enhance their understanding of concepts in Biology. Students are also given opportunities to further develop
their scientific investigation skills. The topics stresses the scientific experimental approach in Biology: enzymes, nutrition in humans and nutrition in plants. The topics
will show on how the enzymes affect the rate of reaction. Furthermore, students will investigate the processes that happen in human and plant to obtain energy for
growth.
Learning Outcomes:









Define what an enzyme is
Explain the mode of enzyme action in terms of an active site, enzyme substrate complex, lowering activation energy and enzyme specificity
Describe the characteristic of enzymes
Explain enzyme action based on the ‘lock and key’ hypothesis
Investigate and explain how temperature and pH affect the rate of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction
Describe the functions of main regions of the alimentary canal and the associated organs in relation to ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation and egestion in
food.
Describe peristalsis and explain its function in mixing and propelling the contents of the alimentary canal
Describe the function of enzyme like amylase, maltase, protease, and lipase in digestion, listing the substrates and end products
Describe the structure of a villus and its role, including the role of capillaries and lacteals in absorption










Discuss the importance of active transport as an energy consuming process by which substances are transported against a concentration gradient
State the function of the hepatic portal vein in the transport of blood rich in absorbed nutrient from the small intestine to the liver
State the role of the liver in carbohydrate metabolism, fat digestion, breakdown of the red blood cells, metabolism of amino acids, formation of urea, and breakdown of
alcohol
Describe the effects of excessive consumption of alcohol
State the chlorophyll traps light energy and converts it into chemical energy for the formation of carbohydrates and their subsequent uses
State the equation, in words and symbol, for photosynthesis
Investigate and discuss the factor affecting the rate of photosynthesis
Identify and label the cellular and tissue structures of a dicotyledonous leaf as seen under the microscope
Relate how the structure of the leaf is adapted to its functions
Describe the intake of carbon dioxide and water by plants
