FACTORS AFFECTING THE GRADE 11
STUDENTS CHOOSING GENERAL ACADEMIC STRANDS
INTRODUCTION
Making decision is the hardest thing a man should do, that sometimes
will lead into a dilemma or confusion. Everyone had an ability to choose the right
for their own, but sometimes their decision will lead into the wrong path.
Some entering college students do not even know what they really want to
major in. Right now, most high school graduates know what course they want to
pursue in college. In fact, when they take entrance examinations and when they
first fill in enrolment forms, they are asked what major they want for themselves.
A quotation’s says that “Open your eyes and look within”, and
“Something made greater by ourselves and in turn that makes us greater”. Every
student would be eager to learn if they study with desire and with passion.
In making decision about their course it always involve their parent’s
decision too. Because they send them to school, they must consult them about
their decision in taking college course. Sometimes when they make decision it
will conflict with them. Also they took the course for reason that influence by
others or by someone that asked to take the degree.
Sometimes they are not aware the course that they took because they are
force by their parents to choose that they want. They don’t have freedom to
choose what they want. They just followed their parents even if it is not suit to
them. There are few students in college now that transfer from one major to
another. Some entering college students do not even know what they really want
to major in. All they know is that they want to have a college degree. What that
degree is does not really matter to them, as long as they get a college diploma.
The researchers’ study will be able to determine how Grade 11 students
choosing General Academic Strands attaining their major decision for their near
college life. It also discovers how it affects the decision of every individual in
choosing the course. Also determine the students if they really choose the right
and survive the hindrances regarding with their studies.
Scope and Delimitation
This study is focus to GAS or General Academic Strand Students from
Grade 11, ages 16 to 18 Years old, to help them realize, what is this study all
about.
Definition of Terms
Choosing Courses when going to college is very confusing one. This is Study all
about helps the Grade 11 GAS Students to have a knowledge about right that
would fit to them. To further more understand about the contents of research
paper, here are some key words to help you out.
Fundamental – Forming or relating to the most important part of something.
Saddening – TO cause someone to be sad.
Hindrances – A person or thing that makes a situation difficult.
Eager – Very excited and interested. Feeling a strong and impatient desire to do
something.
Pursue – To try catch something for usually a long period of time.
Dilemma – A situation in which you have to make a difficult choice.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
This presents The Review of Related Literature to support the researcher’s
study and be able to understand the research clearly.
This Review of Related Literature presents the article focused on the real reason
why the General Academic Strand of the K to 12 programs was implemented. It is
to give ways for the undecided students to think about their preferred degree once
they step in to college. It may seem fair to hear the good side of it but it is obvious
to know that the students who took the said strand are not really that prepared for
their future. One of the anomalies of the program stated in the article is that some
students go to college for the sake of getting a college degree. It sounds dispiriting
if we think about these students’ future, but it really is true. In fact, that is not the
only case. There are over 42 percent of senior-high-school-students-to-be who
weren’t able to enroll this school year due to various reasons, which is quite
saddening. Since we cannot force students to take strands they wouldn’t want to
be spending money on and isn’t their choice, the General Academic Strand is the
way for these undecided students.
However, the article stated that the students who took the General
Academic Strand will not be able to enter a type of college related to the other
strands such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or STEM and
the Accountancy, Business and Management or ABM, because they have not
taken the introductory subjects of either of the two strands. Some students start
college with a major their parents picked for them, not realizing that if they end
up changing majors too far into their education it will take them longer to
graduate. It is also stated that there are some students who are currently in college
that still do not know what future they want to pursue once they entered the adult
life. Thus, they transfer from one course to another in hoping to find the
appropriate track for their future. On a side note, the government did not
implement the General Academic Strand for the undecided students only. Of
course, students that wanted to pursue a major in college related to education are
to be placed in this strand. In one way or another, the future is still in the hands of
each student who are currently in senior high school. Whether they want to get a
degree or simply just graduate, it is still up to them.
These strands are just a guide point in their lives to help them make up
their mind with what they really want to be once they had entered the adult life.
Either way, students really should take the time to make up their mind about
choosing the right path for their designated skills and talents, because these are
the fundamental needs of preparing and choosing the strand suited to help them I
their future jobs.
Objective of Study
1. Determine the different of choosing General Academic Strand/Track.
From than choosing the other academic track.
2. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of studying general academic
strand/track.
3. Determine the benefits that they can get when they finished their studies
on their choosing strand.
Significance of the Study
It is important to us that when we choose our course it should fit in our
line of interest. Our study guides the grade 11 and the upcoming grade 11 students
in choosing general academic strand. this study will also help them analyze if
their chosen strand fits them. Our study also aims to advantages and
disadvantages of studying general academic strand.

Methodology;
The participants of the research will be the Grade 11 Students who have
chosen General academic strand in their Senior High School Years. The research
respondents will be coming from the GAS class of Notre Dame of Parang. The
number of students in the class will be the number of the researcher respondents.
Data will be gathered through observation, survey questions and interrogation.
Through this, we will get the information that we needed. Survey question will
serve as the primary data gathered. The interrogation will be the deeper data.
Videorecorder can also be used to check the Students action/attitude towards the
Strand they have chosen.
