 Inform the reader that you have enclosed your

Emphasize skills or abilities you have that
relate to the job for which you are applying.
(use the job advertisement to guide you)
 Be sure to do this in a confident manner and
remember that the reader will view your letter
of application as an example of your writing
skills.

Important Notes on conventions:
 Begin your application letter by placing your
address first, followed by the address of the
company you are writing to.
 Use complete title and address; don't
abbreviate.
 Always make an effort to write directly to
the person in charge of hiring.
 Always sign letters.
VARP REVIEW
Voice (tone): writing as a person who is keen on a
position, so try to “sale” yourself but still be
humble (confident but not arrogant)
 Audience: hiring manager (they are often busy
bodies. HIGHLIGHT your skills & qualifications
concisely)
 Register: formal (professional language)
 Purpose: persuade the hiring manger to hire you,
so be sure to show WHY s/he should accept you
(use effective action words & adjective to
accentuate your suitability--tapping the modes of
persuasion)

