(a) Recent dilemma of COVID has pushed multiple research groups around the world to develop
vaccine on a fast track basis against the norms of standard vaccine development. University of
Queensland/CSL vaccine was one of the joint ventures from Australia entered research of vaccine.1
(b) Development of COVD vaccine at University of Queensland was based on Molecular Clamp
technology which acted as the platform approach to generate vaccine against a range of human and
animal viruses showing promising results within laboratory targeting viruses such as Ebola, influenza
and MERS coronavirus.
All human beings are considered as stakeholder for this development and holds equal right to get to
know about the development of vaccine and possible implications associated with it. Vaccine which was
being developed by University of Queensland were showing promising result during phase-1 trial, but
unexpected observation related to interference with HIV tests were made on few participants during the
course of trials. There is no possibility of vaccine causing a HIV infection which was verified by
carrying out HIV virus tests.
This abnormal finding during a trail was unavoidable considering the overall progress of the research
and further research could have resulted in agitation within common public. Research joint venture
decided to put a hold phase-2 trial of vaccine and made a public announcement about it with reasons.
(c) All participants involved in vaccine trial were counselled on each possible outcome and they were
also updated on unforeseen observation related to identification of incorrect HIV virus. Considering the
outcome of the phase-1 trial, decision was made by University of Queensland/CSL vaccine to abandon
the further trial of vaccine and all participants including general public were made aware of it.
(d) Representative of research group proven themselves ethical by carrying out the transparent trial of
vaccine by not only keeping trial participants up to date on the progress during trial but also
communicate the same to all stakeholders.2
