Entitlement, or sense that we have the right to have something, can be a healthy expectation but the definition of what Entitlement Mentality is that it could lead to an unhealthy outcome as it means that one has the right to something and that this right is not based on having earned the right. This right exists regardless of one having to do anything (Dictionary.com). This mentality often shows up as: expecting something for nothing; the expectation that one can achieve something with minimal or no effort and believing that another person or people owe one something. Some people say that Generation Z has a huge entitlement mentality. Generation Z are the people born in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s who are perceived as familiar with the Internet from a very young age. Pew Research defines members of Generation Z as anyone born between 1997 and 2012. That means the group spans ages 7 to 22 in 2019 (Manson, 2020). Mark Manson says that entitlement is the consequence of advertising and fake self-help telling you that yes, “you’re special” and yes “you deserve it”. The world's teens and youngest adults have been behind many of the biggest fashion trends, political movements, and memes of 2019. Since Generation Z is notable for being the first generation to be totally immersed in the world of the internet since birth, they have developed a fear of missing out on current styles, issues, and events. Teens have become expressive with the use of internet and the amount of followers or likers they have may become an ego booster. Such things can be overwhelming thus becoming one of the contributors to entitlement mentality. One of the current core causes of the Filipino problems is the hyped sense of entitlement among its people (Chino, F. 2013). Sense of entitlement can be defined as the belief that Filipinos should have what they want, even if there is no proof that they deserve it. This Entitlement Mentality stems from early childhood. Aside from Social Media, one of the things that propelled this idea of entitlement is that when most of our parents asked for something from their parents, they didn’t get it. During our generation, our parents provided us with things that we didn’t necessarily ask for primarily for our convenience. The idea that our parents pampered us so much that we felt like we deserved such treatment. You can say that the parents are the people that can have the most influence in a person’s character and his/her perspective of the world. Since Entitlement Mentality has been labelled as the “Deadliest Mindset of All” and has been observed around most of countries including Philippines, the assessment of how entitled the generation Z are in Cagayan de Oro City has been less studied therefore this study will be conducted, (Lafferty, 2017) STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM This study aims to uncover the Entitlement Mentality rampancy to the members of the Generation Z at Cagayan de Oro City and how it affects them in this era.
