Project Title: Escape Room Conundrum Strategy for English 8 Review Project Authors: Carlo A. Doinog, Secondary School Teacher- III Phone Number: 09773883381 E-mail: carlodoinog27@gmail.com Project Summary: During the faculty meeting last February 14, 2019, Valentine’s Day, Dr. Calick D. Arrieta, highlighted the devastating results of the 1st to 3rd quarter MPS (Mean Percentage Score). The principal pinned the English MPS result, since it was lowest MPS among all subjects. With this alarming fact, I challenged myself to change the kind of review conducted during the quarterly assessment. Instead of the usual pen-paper test conducted during review classes. I administered a game-based strategy in conducting the review for 4th quarter assessment. In recent years there has been much interest in the concept of innovation and its relevance in the educational field. In fact, educational innovation has broadened its perspective deepening beyond the physical architecture of spaces in which teaching and learning take place, and strengthening the idea of creating new learning environments in which pedagogical and psychosocial aspects are encompassed. Therefore and considering the ever-growing need for creating authentic and motivating learning experiences among students, As language a teacher, I intend to open and engage the readers’ mind through an innovative educational strategy in the field of the English 8 language that takes as a reference point a trending game phenomenon, which has won hearts and minds of a countless amount of players all around the world, known as “the escape game”. The strategy also brings in a wide variety of educational aspects through the implementation of an eclectic approach, in which several teaching and learning methods and approaches, resources and materials, and spaces are included. The students from Grade 8 Del Mundo, Dayrit, Kinahimat-an , and Alamat answered different puzzles in five stations, placed in different places within the campus. Each station manifest different topics about topics in 4th quarter English 8, formulated in puzzle form students solve these problems as a group in less than an hour. The teacher simply facilitates the activity with little contact time with students, promoting collaborative learning among group mates. The entire Escape Room was carefully planned by the teacher providing brainbugling puzzles to ensure that the activity will be meaningful. It is also convenient because most of the materials were already available and cost P 75.00 for the other materials not found in the school like padlocks and colored paper. The table below shows the difference between the 3rd Quarter MPS and 4th Quarter MPS. There is a significant difference after using the Escape Room Strategy in review class. Mean Difference on Academic Performance Difference 3rd Quarter MPS 4th Quarter MPS Del Mundo 63.00% 86.35% 20.65% Score in Dayrit 61.00% 85.48% 20.48% English 8 Kinahimat-an 62.00% 76.95% 14.95% Alamat 71.51% 82.37% 10.86% Mean Percentage Section The strategy offers clear evidence that educational innovation, and in particular, educational escape rooms, can be seen as supporters and enhancers of teaching and learning processes in the field of the English language, leading us to believe that language teachers should broaden their perspective, experimenting with new and creative learning spaces that enhance the development of pupils’ skills and competences and therewith improve students’ academic, personal, and social attainments. There is a great possibility that I will be using this strategy for the coming years and I thought of other puzzles for my students and look for more appropriate venue for the escape.
