Bedside Nursing Clinics:
• The nursing clinic is a group discussion that utilizes the
presence of a selected patient, whereby nursing
aspects are presented and discussed.
• Bedside teaching as ‘a rich visual auditory, tactile and
olfactory experience’.
• Bedside clinic, also called bedside teaching, is a
teacher-centred method where a small group of
students are taught in the presence presence of the
patient.
• This method enables learners to acquire skills in
observation, recording of health history,
communication and physical examination, knowledge
of clinical ethics and professionalism.
• Depending on the patient’s convenience, the nursing
clinic can be conducted at the patient’s bedside or in a
clinical teaching/conference room.
Purposes of Bedside Nursing Clinics
• To apply theory into actual practice by observing, interviewing and
studying a patient. • To apply knowledge and experience to real-life
situations. • To highlight the uniqueness of each individual patient,
this can give deeper insight into their individualized nursing problems.
• To understand certain types of apparatus used for particular patient
care. • To improve quality nursing care.
Advantages of Bedside Nursing Clinics
• Bedside nursing clinics provide an opportunity for the
learner or actively participate in real-life situation
learning, thereby building close relationship between
theory and practice.
• It provides opportunity for the nursing students to
learn how to interact with patient, develop rapport,
empathy, self-confidence and develop qualities of
observation and decision-making.
• Nursing clinics facilitate the students to relive their
anxieties, while learning through directly interacting
with patient in the presence of the clinical nursing
teacher.
Disadvantages of Bedside Nursing Clinics
• It is not a suitable clinical teaching method for the
large group of students.
• It may not be convenient and confortable for a
patient, when he/she is used an object of bedside
teaching.
• Sometimes bedside nursing clinics may disrupt the
routine care of patient or vice versa.
• Bedside teaching–learning environment may not be
always conducive for student, teacher, patient and
neighbouring patient and healthcare workers of a
particular ward.
