Sophia Knaggs Chaffin 7A 12-06-2018 Extinguishing the electronics In this day and age, technology has catapulted us humans into this new way of living by modifying almost every possible item to assist us. At my age, a life without technology may appear to be a terrible, horrendous dystopian future, but I need to be able to function without technology. A life without technology can prove beneficial because I can learn new topics and explore all of my possibilities. I order to be occupied without the beloved technology we have come to know and love, the human brain must be engaged in order to find these new activities. Countless activities provide distraction from a technology- less life, and I am willing to try it myself for one short month. Over the course of one month, not having the access to technological advances may, of course, lead me to boredom at times, but I am confident that I will prevail. I have big plans for the month ahead, but they all still require some thoughtful revision so that they have potential to entertain me. I have excitable plans for my month without technology; to enjoy family time, travelling, and trying different things. Spending time with my family brings me great joy, and a month without technology presents the ideal opportunity to devote some time to my dearest loved ones. I could spend part of my technology- free month playing board games with my parents and brother and sister. A game such as backgammon is a game that I cherish my playing time with my dad, as it takes some time to play. My father’s father taught him how to play this antiquated scottish game in his youth. My time may also be spent beating my brother and sister at Snakes and Ladders. Having family barbecues where we invite over cousins or grandparents also bring us together. It is a time when we can relax and possibly watch a football game. At family barbecues, my siblings and I along with our cousins sometimes swim in my pool. During my month without any technology, I must not forget that my brother loves to go to the movies. We could go and view new films coming out such as the Incredibles 2 or Mary Poppins Returns. I especially like Mary Poppins because of all of the songs, and I anticipate hearing the new soundtrack. I believe that the bulk of the month ahead will involve cherishing time with my beloved family. Potentially with my beloved family, would could traverse over the world and rekindle previous memories. Despite having the chance to explore during holidays, we do not always choose to fly away as my dad constantly has to work. That combined with my ballet and my sister’s gymnastics means that we cannot travel too often. I could bond with my brother and sister on this vacation. To further reconnect with family, we may visit Houston to see our cousins and aunt and uncle. When I travel, I am without my technology which is subsequently the biggest cause of me not exploring the glorious new place I am in. I believe that each country has something to offer in terms of delectable cuisine; and I cannot wait to taste it. Also, being on my device secludes me from Earth’s natural architecture as well as historical landmarks. Another travel option is to stay put in sweet Trinidad and Tobago. This country actually has a lot of beautiful hidden treasures in nature to offer. Waterfalls are spread across the country in forested areas like Valsayn and Grande Riviere. My father and I are particularly fond of hikes and they have become father- daughter bonding periods. Journeying across the world is an opportunity for me to discover more about myself, and part of my one month without technology seems fun if it is to be spent travelling. I may not end up travelling the world, therefore I may experiment with miscellaneous pastimes to diversify my abilities. Gardening is an art form, and it appears to be calming and convivial. I could design and make my own fairy garden which is similar to a flower garden, just smaller and with stones and decorations. For as long as I can recall, I have adored smelling flowers and looking at them in gardens. In addition to the convenience of being able to look at flowers right outside my door, maintaining it will keep be distracted from technology. To cook is to create happiness, and I would certainly love to do so. In order to properly be taught how to cook both food and desserts, I may have to visit the Academy of Baking and Pastry Arts. Last summer, I attended a camp at the academy, and learned so much in four days, that I am confident I can learn a lot in more time. I can cook different types of cuisine that tastes delicious for my family. Energetic is a word that is regularly utilized in order to describe me and my personality. I let out my energy by staying active and playing sports. I like to play american football, and my dad teaches me and throws with me. Learning new things and trying them out is very entertaining and fruitful. An entire month without the privilege of having and using technology such as phones, computers, and tablets seems like a treacherous task; but it can be done. Technology has advanced close to everything that we know and in doing so has made life a bit easier to live. Especially in my generation, kids have grown up relying on their mobile devices in order to remain occupied, stay safe, and acknowledge one another. This is not what every kid’s life is like, though. Millions of kids have a hard life and not only because they do not possess technology, but because of their country’s situations. I believe that while I may not have lived exactly like those kids, I can empathize with them in terms of not using technology. Yes, my iPhone and iPad provide entertainment for me when I may get bored, but this month without technology will help me to open my eyes and see what else I still have to learn in order to properly function in the real world. Because after all, technology at times prevents me from truly appreciating the most important things such as family time and averts me from travelling or trying new things.
