PURPOSE
This calculation is provided to determine the rating of the UPS to supply
the critical loads for electrical system for the LPG REFRIGERATED
STORAGE PROJECT at BA RIA – VUNG TAU, VIETNAM.

Calculation condition
Input & Output of UPS shall be as follows.

: 3 ph, 4 wires, 50 Hz, 400 VAC

DC Input
: supplied from Batteries with Back-up time: 4 hour

AC output
: 1 ph, 3 wires (2 + E), 50 Hz, 110 VAC

3.1.
Calculation due to normal loads (P0)
UPS capacity P ≥ P0
Normal loads:
-
P0 = 15.09 kVA
-
Q0 = 9.35 kVAr
(Refer to “Attachment - UPS load Analysis”, this value considered to the
efficiency of loads.)
3.2.
UPS capacity selected (P)
Current wave height is higher than normal wave height because of the
harmonic currents generated by rectifier loads
Therefore:
Design contingency Capacity allowance of 10 % is considered.
UPS Capacity
-
P = 15.09 kW x 1.1 = 16.6 kW
-
Q = 9.35kVAr x 1.1 = 10.29kVAr
-
S = 19.53kVA
From the above calculation, 20 kVA of UPS would be selected

Capacity of Battery (AH/4HR)
Capacity of Battery Bank required:
C = Idc x K x L
Where:

Idc: Discharge current of Battery bank in ( A )
I DC [A] = 1.2 x (S [kVA] x 1000) / UDC [V]

S: Load demand in KVA (S = 20 kVA)
UDC: Average discharge voltage of battery bank in (V)
UDC = 0.86 x Ubat = 0.86 x 110 = 95 V DC
Value 1.2 expressed 20% margin
IDC= 1.2 x (20 x 1000) / 95 = 252.6 A

K: Battery back-up time required (HR), (4 HR )
-
L: Aging factor, ( 1.25 )
C = 252.6 x 4 x 1.25 = 1263 AH / 4HR
Capacity of Battery bank shall be 1263 AH / 4 HR
