Chemical energy - the potential of a chemical substance to
undergo a chemical reaction to transform into other
substances.
Chlorophyll – the green substance (pigment) contained in
the chloroplast of plant leaves that captures the energy in
sunlight
Chloroplast – a structure in a plant cell that contains
chlorophyll, site of photosynthesis
Consumer - living creatures that eat organisms from a
different population.
Decomposer - organism that breaks down dead organic
material
Decomposition – the process by which decomposers break
down dead material and waste into simpler substances
Energy pyramid – diagram that demonstrates the flow of
energy through a food chain
Food chain - the sequence of transfers of matter and energy
in the form of food from organism to organism
Food web - A graphical model showing the interconnecting
food chains in an ecological community
Glucose – a sugar molecule; product of photosynthesis
Photosynthesis – process by which producers / plants use
the energy in sunlight to create their own food
Producer - organism on the food chain that can produce its
own energy and nutrients
Radiant (light) energy - energy that is transferred by
electromagnetic radiation
Trophic level – the position that an organism occupies in a
food chain, food web, or energy pyramid (e.g., producer,
primary consumer, etc.)
