Isolationist
Japan was an isolationist
country that had a policy
of killing foreigners for
coming in to their country!
Warrior landowners
called Shoguns ruled
Japan and they payed
Samurai Warriors to
protect the government by
keeping everything under
control.
Tokugawa shogunate
End of the Shogunate
In 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry
and four U.S. warships arrived in
previously isolated Japan and
threatened to attack if Japan would
not trade with the U.S.
The Shogunate Emperor let the U.S.
in and the people got upset.
In response, the Japanese put
Emperor Meiji in power to strengthen
and modernize Japan. This is called
the Meiji Restoration.
Emperor Meiji
Meiji Restoration
This period was
called the Meiji
Restoration,
which was a
movement
toward
modernization
Expansion
Japan wanted to
expand their economic
and military power so
they could obtain
natural resources and
access to new markets.
This was Prompted in
part because Japan
feared being colonized
by the West after
seeing what happened
in Africa and China.
Modernization
To modernize
Japan, leaders of
the Meiji
government
studied Western
institutions and
technology
Education
They modeled their
education system
after American
schools and
universities.
Industrialization
Between 1870 and 1910
they quickly modernized
and made great
industrial growth by
building ships, railways,
banking systems, coal
mines, factories,
machinery, and
communication systems.
Militarization
The Meiji formed
an Imperial Army
with new, modern
weapons and all
men had to serve
in the Army for
three years!
Imperialism
After Japan industrialized they became
imperialists!
In 1869. they annexed the island of Hokkaido
In 1879 they annexed Okinawa and invaded
Taiwan and Korea
In 1905 they surprised the world by defeating
the Russians during the Russo Japanese War!
Leading up to World War Two, they invaded
and occupied Northern China, Korea,
Singapore, Hong Kong and several territories in
Asia that belonged to the French, British, and
Dutch.
How was Japan’s imperialist
experience unique?
How did Japan react to
Western Imperialism?
How did Japan go from
experiencing Imperialism to
