Name: Jacky Lou A. Magno Course/Year/Section: BSED/First Year/ 12G Date: December 22, 2020 Score: The Physical Self Activity 2. Look at yourself at the mirror and answer the following: 1. Which part of your body are you most proud of? Why? I am most proud of my dimpled cheeks. Among the three of us I am the only one to have two dimples in my both cheeks while my other siblings didn’t have any. And since I have a mediocre face, having dimples helps a lot in boosting my confidence and makes my face a little better to look at. 2. Which part of your body are you not proud of? Why? I may sound to be not contented with my physical appearance, but I am not proud with my height. And to address it I want to have a longer legs, not too long but enough to correspond with my body proportion. Being small turns me into a child, that I am not even allowed to enter malls and supermarkets because the security guards mistook me into a child where in fact I am already 20 years old. Well, I don’t know if it is because of my face, my height, or both. 3. What is your ideal body? Describe the body you want to have. Having a 160 cm tall human body is the ideal body for me. A body that measures 34, 26, and 36. A body that is physically fit and able to do strenuous activities without feeling ill. Being an asthmatic human being has put a toll to everything that I do physically and it makes me want to do more. I do have high standards with an ideal body but its really impossible for me. 4. Do you really need another body to be happy? I may not be contented with my physical aspects which I possess but I do believe that we don’t need to have another body to become happy. Being an extrovert, I can find happiness even with small events where I took part. Happiness can’t be define with a perfect body or a perfect face but with how we appreciate the things that we are able to do with our not so perfect body. We can take an example with those people whom we can say to have the ideal physical appearance however took their lives because of unhappiness. Activity 4 1. A very alarming issue among young people today is depression. From your own point of view, what could be the possible causes of depression? In this technology driven world, the fame on social media for youth has also driven their self-concept away from reality. In order to have fair skin on their profile pictures, lavish clothing, and pleasing physical appearance, one must have the means to cope with this standards. However, not all young people were born with silver spoons on their mouths. In order to avoid the needles of prejudice in this society, they strive and stressed themselves on how to provide the means to cope with the social standards. However, if they fail to meet those means, depression starts and they will begin to blame themselves and their situations for not being able to make themselves pretty. Prejudices base on outside appearance might be simple for some people but it can be worse for some who has issues with their self-concept so its better to mind our biases. 2. What are the possible effects of depression to the person and to the people around him? Depression can make a person fall into the depth of insecurities. It can utterly manipulate a persons concept of the self where he/she will formulate a lot of questions about his own existence and so on and so forth. This can lead into emotional and mental damage to the person. The people around him will also be affected, especially with his/her family. They will be tortured to see their son/daughter being afflicted by the prying eyes of the society. It hurts to see your own son blaming himself for not being able to catch-up with the society’s ideals. 3. As a youth how could you concretely help lessen or overcome the impact of such phenomenon? As a youth, I will minimize my time checking my social media account. Instead of surfing the internet whole day, it would be better to spend more time reading my Bible to uplift my spiritual standard. I will spend a lot of time with nature and with my family to take care on my mental and emotional aspect. With this I will be able to lessen and even overcome the phenomenon of depression. The Sexual Self Activity 1 Interview two kinds of parents (one adolescent and one adult) and relate their experience in raising children, and in making a living to raise a family. Write down your insights about their experience and how applicable the use of contraception is in their situation. After interviewing an adolescent and an adult parent, a lot of realizations surge into my mind. Literally, no one lives in a perfect family because everyone has flaws and imperfect. No matter how perfect a family looks like, there are internal struggles that either makes it stronger or vulnerable against the afflictions that the world has given. However, there are circumstances for a family although we can’t call it perfect but worthy to be known as a little paradise on earth. In handling family situations, insights from various experiences, either from others or from their own is a must. Mr. A is an adolescent parent who gives up his single status at the age of 18. As of now, he is a father of two adorable little girls while his wife uses an artificial contraception or shall I say birth control pills to help prevent any unexpected pregnancy. During the interview, I can really sense his hardships on being the sole bread winner of his family. In an early age, he strives to make a living for his new family without any orientation about the actual hardships of having a family. For him to be able to avoid further difficulties, contraceptives is a must. On the other hand, Mr. B is an adult parent who has gathered a lot of insights from others experiences and from his own before making his own new nest. I observed that they are not that well-off but it is enough for me to say that they have a comfortable life. He has three children and his wife didn’t use any artificial contraceptives but they practiced natural birth control. He says that he can afford having more children but prefer to have only three so that he could properly manage the spiritual, emotional, and even financial aspects of his children. He also added that hey also have problems inside their family but with the help of God and applications from his life insights, he was able to resolve it immediately. Activity 2 Slogan-Making. Compare your slogans to the rest of the class and come up with a unique statement for the whole class on Sexual Health and Well-being. To make sure that our well-being is comfortable enough to be called as living, one must acquire unwavering commitment towards life, responsible decisions, steadfast self-discipline, and self-control towards his/her sexual life. In that way, we will be able to make the smallest institution of the community into a little paradise on earth. I feel like it makes my brain coordinate well with my goals. And of course some other necessities for like toiletries that makes myself pleasant with my day to day plans. Activity 3 ESSAY. Describe some aspects of your self-concept that have been created through social comparison. Write down your thoughts and feelings in no less than 300 words. “Aiming From What They Say” In the technology driven world, fair skin is a must, being pretty is required, and being “social” is aimed by many. Beauty was judged with how many reactions were collected to every post in social media. Where fact and fake are almost the same and destroying someone is just at the tip of a finger. What others will say, will be the aim of everybody. Our family is neither rich nor poor, maybe I would name it as “fortunate to have the means”. We are not originally like that. During my elementary days, I remember having a five peso coin as an allowance that should shared with my younger sister in kindergarten. With that five peso coin, me and my sister were contented and thankful to have it. However, the time comes when I started to compare the allowances of my classmates which is far more bigger than our five peso coin. My self-concept has changed that I pitied myself. We walk for at least six kilometers a day to reach our school while my classmates have their parents accompany them with motorcycles. That was the time that I vowed to myself to try harder and make some degrees of change in our living standards. After living Maguindanao, my family make a living in Bukidnon. At first, it was still difficult since we are new in that place. My father tried his best to make enough but its still lacking. My family was almost buried with debts and our neighbors frequently compared us to my uncle’s family who were doing better than us. However, God have heard our prayers and has blessed our endeavors. We aim our efforts from their judgement and I think the constant social comparison may have a huge role on what we are today. Social comparison could be not so bad at all if it will trigger our instincts to strive harder to survive. On the other hand, it could also be fatal if one has become obsessed to live on the social standards set by the society and has forgotten the essence of his own self. As of now, we may be “fortunate to have the means” but we are still coping up into this fast-changing world where being “social” is aimed by many.
