LAB #: 18 DATE: ____________________________________________ TOPIC: Germination AIM: To determine whether temperature affects germination SKILL: Observation, Recording and Reporting MATERIALS/APPARATUS: 1. Tissue paper 2. 3 Disposable cups or small containers 3. 15 Bean Seeds 4. Water 5. Table spoon 6. Refrigerator with freezer 7. Measuring Cup PROCEDURES: SOAKING THE BEANS: 1. Group 3 sets of 5 bean seeds. 2. Place each set of beans in dishes/cups and label as A, B and C respectively. 3. Add ½ cup of water in each dish/cup and soak the 3 sets of bean seeds overnight. (Take a Picture) (ensure beans are submerged) 4. Remove the 5 beans from dish/cup A and pat dry with tissue paper. Observe the bean size and external structure. Repeat this procedure for beans sets B and C. APPARATUS SET-UP: 5. Label dishes/cups as A, B and C respectively. 6. Place each set of soaked beans in the dish/cup labelled respectively. 7. Gently cover/wrap beans with tissue paper. Add 2 table spoons of water to the tissue paper in each dish/ cup. (Take a Picture) 8. Place dish/ cup A in the freezer at low temperature. (Freezer section of the refrigerator). (Take a Picture) 9. Place dish/ cup B in the refrigerator (cooling section of the refrigerator). 10. Place dish/ cup C on the counter at room temperature. 11. Leave apparatus A, B and C for 48 hours. 12. Moisten tissue paper with 2 table spoons of water daily during the 48 hours. 13. After the 48 hours, count the number of seeds that have germinated in each apparatus at the respective temperature and convert this to a percentage. Record in a table.
