This lab has been adjusted to Distance Learning due to Covid-19. SIMULATION
DEMONSTRATED BY TEACHER THROUGH A RECORDING. However students still need to
conduct the experiment at home using available apparatus.
LAB #:
18
DATE:

TOPIC:
Germination
AIM:
To determine whether temperature affects germination
SKILL:
Observation, Recording and Reporting
MATERIALS/APPARATUS:
1. Tissue paper
2. 3 Disposable cups or small containers
3. 15 Bean Seeds
4. Water
5. Table spoon
6.
Refrigerator with freezer
7.
Measuring Cup
PROCEDURES:
SOAKING THE BEANS:
1. Group 3 sets of 5 bean seeds.
2. Place each set of beans in dishes/cups and label as A, B and C respectively.
3. Add ½ cup of water in each dish/cup and soak the 3 sets of bean seeds overnight.
(Take a Picture) (ensure beans are submerged)
4. Remove the 5 beans from dish/cup A and pat dry with tissue paper. Observe the bean
size and external structure. Repeat this procedure for beans sets B and C.
APPARATUS SET-UP:
5. Label dishes/cups as A, B and C respectively.
6. Place each set of soaked beans in the dish/cup labelled respectively.
7. Gently cover/wrap beans with tissue paper. Add 2 table spoons of water to the tissue
paper in each dish/ cup. (Take a Picture)
8. Place dish/ cup A in the freezer at low temperature. (Freezer section of the
refrigerator). (Take a Picture)
9. Place dish/ cup B in the refrigerator (cooling section of the refrigerator).
10. Place dish/ cup C on the counter at room temperature.
11. Leave apparatus A, B and C for 48 hours.
12. Moisten tissue paper with 2 table spoons of water daily during the 48 hours.
13. After the 48 hours, count the number of seeds that have germinated in each apparatus
at the respective temperature and convert this to a percentage. Record in a table.

GRADING CRITERIA:
OBSERVATION, RECORDING AND REPORTING-ORR Criteria
Observation:
 Compares the external structure of the beans before and after being soaked.
 Where applicable, recognize signs of germination.
 Where applicable calculate the percentage of germination.
 Makes credible deductions based on observations.
Recording: Table of results:
 Table neatly drawn using pencil and ruler
 Size of table: column width and row height are appropriate
 Title is in full caps
 Title of table is logical
 Title placed above the table
 Title underlined twice with red pen
 Appropriate column headings
 Identification of percentage of germinating seeds.
 Results are credible/ accurate for calculating the percentage for germinating
seed.
Reporting:
Is logically sequenced
Description of observation is correct and corresponds to data on table of results.
Language and Expression:
 Few (1-2) or no grammatical/spelling errors
