Civility in Nursing Definition and Discussion
Civility in nursing can be defined as nurses adopting behavior that portrays respect for
other individuals, making them feel valued, contribute to mutual respect, and encouraging them
to engage in team collaborations. Majority of us can witness the various changes in our nursing
environment and society in general. Nonetheless, dealing with these changes can be traumatic to
the majority of us, and addressing these challenges at an individual level is the best solution for
us all. For instance, if one is working as a full-time nurse, sometimes the many hours you spend
at the workplace is more important than spending your time at home. Therefore, making more
efforts to stay at your workplace will be valuable to patients and your colleagues. It is worth
noting that every significant step begins with the first few simple steps and attaining a civil
working environment; everyone needs to be involved to all move together.
Importance of Civility in Nursing
Civility is essential in nursing because civility can form a solid background for ensuring
safety to patients, a conducive working environment, healthy staff, and intensifying the
production level within the health facility. Also, civility has a tremendous impact on nurses'
quantity and quality within a set period. Another point is that formality provides an opportunity
for the nurses to forgive those who might have done injustice to them, to search for solid ground,
ambitions, and purpose in their day to day life. Apart from that, practicing civility in a nursing
setting is an ethical consideration. Regardless of their position, every nurse is expected to create
and maintain a healthy workplace, encourage an atmosphere that supports dignity and
professionalism, and treat others with the utmost respect (Lower, 2012).
Strategies to promote Civility in Nursing
Civility in nursing can be enhanced through various strategies, as illustrated below:
Assessing your behaviors
Promotion of civility can be started by encouraging nurses to assess their behaviors by
first determining what actions they can take to contribute positively to their workplace. And they
can also ask a trusted friend's feedback to know if their behavior is positive and correct it if it is
not. For instance, if you learn that your behavior is affecting others negatively, you will be
pushed to rectify it and become an ambassador of civility, which is our paper's goal.
Know what triggers you
The second strategy is that nurses should know what triggers their anger, which will
enable them to monitor and manage their reactions. Even though they have no control over what
other people talk or do, they have the power to control and manage what they can say back to
them. Nurses should always consider the impacts their words can have on other people. Apart
from that, knowing what motivates you as a nurse is also vital because it will empower you to
carry on, thus enhancing civility in the field. For instance, if you believe that you are an efficient
nurse and overcome any obstacle, you will be surprised by how good you will perform at it. You
will embrace yourself that always teaches you to become a motivated nurse, which will be a
better motivation.
Practice empathy
The last strategy to emphasizing civility in nursing workplace settings is educating nurses
to always put themselves in other persons’ shoes, which shows they fully understand the context
of their words or actions. It will help them understand what triggers their actions. Also, putting
oneself in another person's shoes is crucial as you will know what they are going through and
thus see what you can do to make the decision better.
