Energy cannot be seen or observed
directly and can be thought of as the
ability to do work.
3. ______________
nuclear
4. ______________
electrical
Energy exists as different types and
can be transferred, or changed, from
one form to another.
5. ______________
The amount of energy an object has is
measured in joules (J).
7. ______________
There are nine different types of
energy that you need to be aware of:
chemical
6. ______________
elastic
gravitational

Kinetic Energy
Whenever something or someone is in motion, it has
kinetic energy. When water or wind is moving it has kinetic
energy, and people have used wind and water to produce
electricity.
So these days we have wind and hydro power we can use
in all sorts of ways.
Which photo shows KE?
Where does kinetic energy come from?
All kinetic energy begins as potential energy
A parked car with the motor turned off is an example of
potential energy. If the ignition is turned on, a spark is
created to ignite the gas in the engine and now you have
kinetic energy
Kinetic energy depends on mass and
velocity

Which car has greater KE?

Car 1 because it has more velocity.
Which vehicle has greater KE?
The kinetic energy (KE) of an object depends on its mass and its velocity.
The equation for calculating kinetic energy is:
Calculating kinetic energy
kinetic energy = ½ x mass x velocity2
KE = ½mv2
What are the units of kinetic energy, mass and velocity?
 Kinetic energy is measured in joules (J).
 Mass is measured in kilograms (kg).
 Velocity is measured in metres per second (ms-1).
Kinetic energy problem
A car has a mass of 1500 kg and is
travelling at a velocity of 10 ms-1.
What is the kinetic energy of the
car?
kinetic energy = ½ x mass x velocity2
= ½ x 1500 kg x (10m/s)2
= 75000J
