REPORTING WHAT SOMEONE SAID Rules: In writing, you will need to report exactly what someone said. Put the speaker’s exact word inside quotation marks. A comma sparates the quotation from the rest of the sentence. Capitalize the first word of the quote. Put periods, commas, or question marks inside the final quotation mark.
