I know a lot of folks had their summer plans obliterated because of
COVID, so I decided to list a bunch of free courses/workshops that you
can complete to bolster your CV a bit. A number of these focus on
research; if you weren't successful in getting one of those coveted
Toronto Research Positions™, having some of these on your application
next year might help! If you know of any additional ones, please list
them in the comments below!
Research:
TCPS 2: CORE (Course on Research Ethics): the main, fundamental
course on research in Canada. All researchers must complete it in
this country. (If you complete this, keep your certificate, as you will
be asked for it in the future.)
Introduction to the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research:
great course offered by the US National Institutes of Health, really
comprehensive and can lead to a certificate!
Peer review training: free all the time, offered by a major academic
publisher
CIHR Sex and Gender in Biomedical Research: course offered by
the Canadian Government's health research funding agency,
about how to properly account for sex and gender in biological
research
General Healthcare
Inspiring Change: introduction to the field of Knowledge
Translation, enrolment until May 18, 2020
Effective crisis communications: enrolment until May 4, 2020
Communication and Cultural Competence in Canada: made by the
Medical Council of Canada for physicians, but there's likely
something you can pick up too!
Mental Health
More Feet on the Ground: basic fundamentals of supporting
others through mental health difficulty, with a focus on referring
