Changing Direct Speech
into Indirect Speech
According to the Kinds of
Sentences
Declarative/ Assertive
Sentences
 Those sentences which make statements and end with the fullstop in running
sentences is known as declarative sentences.
 These Sentences are changed from direct to indirect speech according to the 3
rules i.e.:
•
Changing of punctuations.
•
Changing of pronouns
•
Changing of tenses
He says that, “I goes to school.”
He says that he goes to school
Optative Sentences
 Those sentences which express wishes, desires and pray.
 Rules of changing Optative Sentences:
1. “Said” is changed into “Wished”.
2. “Inverted commas” changed into “that”.
3. “Would that” and “O that” are removed.
4. “May” is changed into might and it goes right after subject.
Example:
He said, “would that I were rich”.
He wished that he had been rich.
Other Example
They said , “we wished we played well”.
They wished that they had played well.
She said ,“O that I obeyed my teacher”.
She wished that she had obeyed her teacher.
They said , “May I pass the exam”.
She wished that she might pass the exam.
