∞A vertically transmitted infection {or motherto-child transmission} is an infection caused
by bacteria, viruses or in rare cases parasites
transmitted directly from the mother to an
embryo, fetus or baby during pregnancy or
childbirth.
∞This infection occur when the mother gets
and infection as an intercurrent disease in
pregnancy. Nutritional deficiencies may
exacerbate the risk of perinatal infections.
∞Viral infections of the fetus and newborn are
common problems in neonatology practice
and must be considered in the differential
diagnosis of newborns with intrauterine
growth retardation, physical examination and
laboratory abnormalities, and illness in
the newborn period.
