Kusin, Ph.D. HYPOTHESIS I. DEFINITION OF HYPOTHESIS A Hypothesis can be defined as: A hypothesis (plural hypotheses) is a precise, testable statement of what the researcher(s) predict will be the outcome of the study; It is a speculation or theory, based on insufficient evidence, that lends itself to further testing and experimentation. With further testing, a hypothesis can usually be proven to be true or false; McGuigan (1978) says that a hypothesis is a testable statement of a potential relations between two or more variables; Gay (1976) defines it as “a tentative explanation for certain behaviours, phenomena, or events which have occurred or will occur.”; A hypothesis is a tentative conclusion or answer to a specific question raised at the beginning of the investigation. It is an educated guess about the answer to a specific question. (Calderon&Gonzales, 2016, p. 31); and A hypothesis is defined as a wise guess that is formulated and temporarily adopted to explain the observed facts covered by the study. It guides the researcher in that it describes the procedure to follow in conducting the study. Hypothesis is important for it tells the researcher what to do and how to go about solving a research problem. FORMS OF HYPOTHESIS In research, there is a convention that the hypothesis is written in two forms, the null hypothesis, and the alternative hypothesis (called the experimental hypothesis when the method of investigation is an experiment). A. Alternative Hypothesis The alternative hypothesis states that there is a relationship between the two variables being studied (one variable has an effect on the other). It states that the results are not due to chance and that they are significant in terms of supporting the theory being investigated. It is also always stated in a positive form. This says “there is a difference,” meaning that the independent variable affects the dependent variable. b Examples: Question: Is there any significant difference between the precetions of the teachers and those of the students concerning the different aspects in the teaching of science?
