English 1021: Writing for Second Language Students II
Spring Semester 2020
Sections 001 & Section 056
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Narrative Essay Assignment – Outline (5%)
Throughout this semester, students will be required to write three essays that are
approximately eight hundred words in length. The specific expectations of each essay
assignment will be given in the future. However, as the module lessons have stated, it is
never a good idea to start an essay of any genre without first having a clear plan about
how it will be organized and developed.
This first assignment’s goal is have students develop a tentative plan for the first of the
three major essay assignments: the narrative essay. In order to make this process easier,
an outline template has been provided for you.
Under normal teaching circumstances, this form would be given to students during
lectures so that you may complete it by its deadline. Due to the current remote distancing
underway during this pandemic, you may copy the headings of this form into a text file
and fill the details out on your own. You do not need to include the lines under each
objective, but you should organize and present your statements as indicated below.
Section 1 – Narrative Essay Topic & Goals
DIRECTIONS: Students are to complete the following statements so that the instructor
can have some insight into the tentative future topic of your narrative essay. Each
response should be no longer than one sentence.
1. My narrative essay will tell a story about….: _______________________________
2. The goal behind telling this story is to….: __________________________________
3. The essay’s thesis is….: _________________________________________________
Section 2 – Narrative Essay Body Paragraphs
DIRECTIONS: Students are to complete the following statements in order to provide
some insight into the three main points that the narrative essay will develop.
There are many ways to develop your essay’s body paragraphs: you could divide the
story into three significant stages or events; you could explore three lessons or
discoveries that this story lead you to; you could focus on three different reactions to the
story.
Take a look at the essay summaries and other notes in the narrative modules for some
insight into how previous students have organized their essays.
Each of these responses should be no longer than two-to-three sentences.
1. The first body paragraph will be about….: _________________________________
2. The second body paragraph will be about….: ______________________________
3. The third body paragraph will be about….: ________________________________
