CHW3M Culminating Assignment Name:______________________ A Global Perspective of the Ancient World Your task is to investigate the characteristics, contributions, influences, impact and legacies of a civilization which we have not studied in detail already in class. You will research your chosen civilization, and prepare a presentation that describes its characteristics. You will present your information to the class (10 minutes). The information that you provide will be the only information that your classmates will learn about your civilization. They will take notes and information from the presentations will be covered on the final exam. You will also write a 5 paragraph essay with a thesis that proves how the characteristics of the civilization contribute to their being defined as a civilization. This must be accompanied with a bibliography citing all the sources of information used. RESEARCH - Start with the textbook. Search for print (encyclopaedias, reference sets and books) and then Internet sources. Use Online History databases (see MDHS web site - Library Page). 2. Record all sources for your bibliography. Take notes. 3. Guidelines • • • • • • for your presentation: Geography- features of the area: natural resources, climate, etc Economic basis- what industry to support the population Infrastructure- buildings, cities, roads, etc Government/Social structure- slaves, kings, how are leaders chosen, women’s rights, class structure, etc Laws and Defense- laws, punishment, protection from invaders Religion and morals- roles of gods in daily life and rituals, morals of inhabitants, sacred beliefs, etc • • Customs and Traditions- common practices surrounding births, marriages, death, divorce, etc Loyalty and Patriotism- how are they developed and encouraged IMPORTANT! Slide shows are visual tools. Make effective use of images- maps, photos, diagrams, etc Limit the amount of text and instead use the images to teach and explain your civilization to the class. 4. Determine what characteristics you believe make a human settlement a civilization (e.g. political, economic, social, intellectual, artistic and technological features) Review the criteria discussed at the beginning of the course. Structure a thesis statement which answers the question: Should this human settlement be considered a civilization? Plan your essay and complete Essay Outline (see handout) Write your essay. 5 paragraphs: Introduction (with thesis statement) 3 paragraphs (body of essay) Each paragraph will refer back to the criteria that you established to determine a civilization. Remember, the quality of your essay will reflect the time and thought spent developing your criteria.
