TYPES OF
WAVES
LESSON 6.2
Can you think of some
examples of waves?
Waves
Sound
•Light
•Water
•Radio
•Seismic
•
WHAT IS A WAVE?
A wave is a means of transferring
energy from one place to another
TYPES OF WAVES
Waves are classified according on how they move.
1.
TRANSVERSE WAVES
2.
LONGITUDINAL WAVES
3.
SURFACE WAVES
TRANSVERSE WAVES
A wave where the direction of the vibration
is perpendicular to
the direction in which the wave travels
TRANSVERSE WAVES
TRANSVERSE WAVES
Examples
• Light waves
• Radio waves
• Waves on a rope
• Water waves
LONGITUDINAL WAVES
A wave where the direction of the vibration
is parallel to the
Direction in which the wave travels.
LONGITUDINAL WAVES
The parts, where the coils are close together are called
compressions, the parts where the coils are spread out
are called rarefactions.
SURFACE WAVES
Surface waves are a combination of
transverse and longitudinal waves. The
waves occur at the surface between
water and air.

What are the
three types of
waves?
1.
Transverse waves
2.
Longitudinal waves
3.
Surface waves
A wave where the

travels
TRANSVERSE WAVES
A wave where the
direction of the
vibration
is parallel to the
Direction in which
the wave travels.
LONGITUDINAL WAVES
These are a
combination of
transverse and
longitudinal waves.
The waves occur at
the surface
between water and
air.
