Auditory Bombardment Examples: So just say you have chosen the ‘s’ sound for auditory bombardment. This is how your activities for auditory bombardment might look: Activity 1: You give your child a picture to colour of all ‘s’ words (e.g. sit, soup, salt, seal etc.). While they are colouring you provide multiple repetitions of ‘s’ words for them to listen to (remember they only have to listen, not say or repeat the words). Activity 2: ‘Lucky Dip’ – fill a bag with ‘s’ items (e.g. sit, soup, salt, seal etc.). Take turns pulling something out and name it a few times for your child to hear. Or alternatively hide ‘s’ items around the house and have your child look for them Activity 3: Make a post box (or use a toy one) and take turns posting ‘s’ pictures and naming them multiple times (e.g. you could say ‘Say bye to the sun/seal/soup etc.). Activity 4: Stick ‘s’ pictures to the walls around the house at your child’s level and get them to collect them in a sock. Provide multiple repetitions of the words as your child collects them (e.g. ‘Oh I see you have a seal in your sock!!’). Activity 5: Play a game of ‘Pop up Pirate’ (available to buy) and while you play with your child again provide multiple repetitions of as many ‘s’ words as you can. Stick the swords under the ‘s’ pictures and name each one as you pick up a sword! Activity 6: Go to YouTube and listen to the Jolly Phonics Song for ‘s’ a few times. Get your child to colour in the ‘s’ picture that goes with the song too. There are lots of alphabet songs available online that you could also listen to. For example the ‘The Letter S Song - Learn the Alphabet’ is available on YouTube (at this link: which provides multiple repetitions of the p sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSVzk2pqWB4 ) Activity 7: Repeat song and rhymes that provide multiple repetitions of the ‘s’ sound e.g. Sally Go Round the Sun Sally go round the sun, Sally go round the moon. Sally go round the chimney pots On a Saturday afternoon. Sippity Sup Sippity sup, sippity sup, Bread and milk from a china cup. Bread and milk from a bright silver spoon Made of a piece of the bright silver moon. Sippity sup, sippity sup, Sippity, sippity sup. Activty 8: Sorting Game – Sort pictures/ objects by their initial sound. So have an assortment of pictures or items beginning with ‘s’ and with other sounds too. E.g. ‘Let’s put all of the ‘s’ pictures in the post box. Sun – do I hear a ‘s’ sound for sun?….yes! Let’s post sun! Cow – do I hear any ‘p’ sound in cow?...no!’ etc. It’s ok at this stage if your child can’t do the sorting part by themselves; the goal here is just for them to hear multiple repetition of the ‘s’ sound. Identifying the initial sound in words is a more difficult skill that children may take some time to learn. Remember – you can’t go wrong with auditory bombardment, the more repetition your child hears the better! Some children need to hear sounds more often than other children before they can learn to use them correctly. You can focus on one sound at a time if you wish for 2-4 weeks and then move on to another one.
