The best question to start with is ‘Why NOW?’ Try to understand why now is the right time for your client to make this change. Say something like… Ask your client what resonates and aligns them with your values and approach. Making this connection will strengthen the relationship and remind them of what it is that made them reach out to you and made them feel connected to you. question 3 What is the ONE big THING? Identify the biggest roadblock that is holding your client back from where they want to be. The aim here is to drill down on what they’re truly looking for and how you can help them most directly now. “Now Jane, if you had to pick one thing that you feel is holding you back right now from [insert where they want to be] what would that be? I’m sure there’s probably a few but if you were to just pick the one biggest roadblock or obstacle you feel you need help with, what would that be?” D O E R S W A Y stop dreaming start doing 2 Why Now? “So firstly, can you tell me Jane, why now? Why is now the right time for you to be [insert what you help people do]?” T H E question “And why me/us? What is it about me/us that you resonate with? What is it that you align with?” question 4 Imagine 12 months from now... what would success look like to you? Ask them to define what success looks like to them as every individual has a different idea of this and you want to provide a solution that matches this. “Yea, I totally get it! That [insert the ONE big thing/ roadblock they mentioned] can be super difficult! Tell me – imagine 12 months from now, what would success look like to you? (Write down what they say as you’ll need this for the next question!) The Perfect Consult Script question 5 So what I’m hearing is… Does that sound about right? Confirm that you have HEARD them by repeating their intentions and aims in your own words. This simple act of repeating what they have told you will give them confidence that you are listening to them, and understand their goals, which in turn builds trust. (Try to use 2-3 “so what I’m hearing is...” statements.) “Awesome. I love this, thanks so much for sharing Jane! So what I’m hearing is that you’d like to build a website but you’re not sure where to start. And I’m also hearing that you’ve got quite a few ideas in mind but you need someone to handle all of the tech side of it for you. And I’m hearing that you’ve got limited time to be hands-on with this and just need the website live, looking good but an expensive, complicated back-end to manage… Does that sound about right?” T H E D O E R S W A Y stop dreaming start doing Next, Give the Prescription Take control and give them confidence that you are the right person to lead them in the right direction. Explain the direction you recommend they take to get them from where they are to where they want to be. Match that up with your program or with confidence and clarity so they know they are in good hands. Start this by saying something like… “Ok, thanks for that Jane, this is making sense. Here’s what I want to do… I want to tell you what I’m thinking for you in this situation and kind of map out a bit of a plan of attack then at the end, I’ll check in with you and see if that aligns…Is that ok? Awesome. Ok, so here’s what I’m thinking…[explain prescription].” The Perfect Consult Script final question Does that sound like a plan? This simple question allows them to commit and take action to trust you and follow your instructions. Because you’ve listened, and matched up a solution to the problem they told you they had, well… it’s kinda a no-brainer question! Their commitment is a powerful stage - one to celebrate as it is a huge step in the right direction for them! Get The Details and Welcome Them In closing, make sure you have all the practical information you need... address, credit card, email, phone number and the date and time of your next appointment together (coaching call etc).
