The Rules of Meem Saakinah
‫أحكام الميم الساكنة‬
• Meem Saakinah: • Is a Meem with no Harakah ‫ م‬or a
Meem with a Sukoon sign (ْ ).
• Rules of Meem Saakinah : 1- Idghaam Shafawi.
2- Ikhfaa’ Shafawi.
3- Idhar Shafawi.
First :Idghaam Shafawi
• Idgham means: - “to mix” or to put one thing into
another. It is the mixing or entering of a saakina letter
“‫ ”م‬into a Mutaharrik letter “‫ ”م‬following it.

Letter of Idghaam Shafawi:“‫”م‬
The way of pronounciation:- If a Meem Saakinah
is followed by a “‫ ”م‬, the second Meem is pronounced
with most complete Ghunnah.
Examples:
Second: Ikhfaa Shafawi
• Ikhfaa means:- “hide”, So it is the hiding of the
origination of Meem by not letting the two lips come in
complete contact.
• Letter of Ikhfaa Shafawi :- “‫”ب‬
• The way of pronounciation:If the Meem Sakin is followed by a “‫ ”ب‬the Meem is
pronounced in a way
that the two lips do not come in complete contact. A
complete ghunnah is done in this case.
Examples:
Third: Idhar Shafawi
• Idhar Shafawi means: - “clear” or clear Meem •

Letters of Idhar Shafawi:- All the Letters other
than “‫“م‬, ”‫“ب‬
The way of pronunciation:- If the Meem Saakinah
is followed by any letter other than “‫ ”م‬or “‫”ب‬it has to be
pronounced clearly by making a complete contact of the
two lips.
