Citizen Kane is a 1942 film by Orson Welles which presents the life and Legacy or
Charles Foster Kane. The film showcases Kane uttering his final dying word ‘Rosebud’. The
meaning of "Rosebud", Kane's dying word, is a reminder to him about his most traumatic and
life-defining experience, recounted earlier in the film, which is aimed at depicting his early life
and what he eventually became and achieved. It turns out that Rosebud refers to a cheap little
Slade that Kane played on the day he left home and his mother. Kane subsequently but
unsuccessfully sought his motherly love and this is why he spends most of his life trying to seek
love and approval from other people. “Rosebud’ can be considered as his defiant yet hopeless
rejection of the riches that eventually transform his life. In Kane’s subconscious mind, Rosebud
denoted the simple life, comfort, and carefree life he had experienced at his home as well as his
mother’s undying love.
Kane’s dying word, rosebud, Rosebud makes Charles Foster Kane be perceived as a
having lived a beautiful and remarkable life, but missing his beautiful youth. Rosebud refers to
the beginning stage of a rose flower, and is the dying word that Kane utters on his death bed.
Perhaps, Kane was reminiscing the beautiful life he had lived and felt that he had lived his life to
the fullest, and built beautiful memories and this is why his final moment was truly happy.
There are various moments in moments in the film that supports my claim that Rosebud
refers to Kane’s beautiful life memories. The clues that led me to my interpretation include the

moment when his mother makes the tough decision to choose the comfort and experiences
realized from wealth ahead of her own love for Kane. Subsequently, Kane proceeds to
experience the fullness of life despite the setbacks that he been forced to cope with in his early
life.
