Too a small extent that I agree the keen interest in Christmas celebration among Chinese
people reflects that they see Western culture more important than Chinese culture.
To commence, globalisation does promote the diversity of culture globally. The integration of
different culture can produce new culture and make it more diverse, so as to increase people’s
choice and satisfy different people. As the globalization increase the communication of
information by introducing a new culture such as Christmas to different places. Referring to
the source, it has mentioned that Chinese people treats Christmas as a festival to celebrate
however it’s a day to commemorate Jesus’s birth. It has been switched to a happy holiday
with consumption as merchants hype their commodity under the influences of Christmas. The
keen interest in Western culture is based on the entertainment of the holiday which is cater to
the current trend of young generation. Compared to Chinese traditional culture, even during
the Spring Festival, iconic activities such as red pockets, reunion dinners, and couplets have
been lost its meanings. Moreover, although these activities are nationwide, the activities
themselves are family-based, and the members involved are all within the families. These
activities do not have the characteristics of entertainment and celebration like Christmas and
Halloween, and they cannot attract the attention of young people. Moreover, under the impact
of the Internet and the pressures of many aspects of life, traditional Chinese festivals have
lost the joyful atmosphere. This eventually reduce the interests of Chinese people towards
Chinese culture that Chinese people see Western culture more important than Chinese
culture.
Secondly, Hong Kong is a place where Chinese and Western cultures gather, and its
acceptance of Western culture is relatively high. Western festivals such as Christmas promote
the development of local cultural exchanges and cultural diversity through consumer products
and services. However, it leads to homogenization of culture. The Western multinational
corporations introduce different cultural invasions such as Christmas trees, decorations,
music, , movies, fashion etc. Under the influence of globalization with advancement of
information transmission, it has led to cultural imperialism that the western countries
monopoly the culture diversity. The drawback is that the intrusion of culture will lead to
simulation of lifestyle or even homogeneity as the cultural difference is reduced. For
example, the foreign festivals promote commercialisation in Hong Kong such as Easter,
Halloween and Christmas. These festivals improve people’s quality of life by introducing a
new mode of celebration and increase the participation in globalisation process.
In the other point of views, the prejudice that Western culture is superior to Chinese culture
has become another incentives of promoting Western festivals. The preference of celebrating
Christmas rather than Spring festival will damage the place of Chinese culture in the global
stage. Hong Kong people are deeply influenced by Western holiday culture. In addition,
Christmas on December 25 is a public holiday. Too many people develop the habit of
consuming during Christmas or holding parties. In the mainland China, Christma is not a
public holiday, however more and more people celebrate Christmas. This situation where
Western culture dominates the cultural globalisation, has reduced the influence of traditional
Chinese culture. According to the source, there is an appeal for abolishment of the
mainstream Christmas celebration. The reason is that the Western culture exploits the chance
for development of Chinese culture as it attract the most people to participate through
commercial promotion. Christmas has given Chinese people a imagination that they are
integrated into the Western culture while they just out-focus on the purpose of Christmas.
However, Western festivals are not as deeply rooted in people's hearts as traditional Chinese
festivals, and they cannot provide people humanistic care and emotional satisfaction. They do
not have rich cultural connotations and do not have enough spiritual sustenance. Think of
China’s Lantern Festival, Spring Festival, Double Ninth Festival, Qingming Festival, both
have rich cultural and spiritual connotations. At this time, people are eager to return home, or
think about others, always expressing their mood or entrusting their emotions. Every time
during different traditional festivals, people’s reactions are always the same as the emotions
that the festival should have, and they are universal. The meaning of this festival has been
rooted in the hearts of every Chinese people so that the traditional value is way more
important to the commercial value. A keen interest in Christmas will just make the
integration of culture more diversify.
