What do stock exchanges and online casinos have in common?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s been a strange phenomenon. Stock markets have
not only seen extremely bullish growth since the March crash but rampant volatility with
events like Hertz, a car rental company undergoing bankruptcy, seeing extraordinary
growth in their stocks.
The short answer to why the stock market has been contradicting the economy is because
of retail investors. Many people have spare time and money due to Coronavirus’ restricting
other leisure activities. This is also why we have seen rapid growth in the <a

Both the stock exchange and online casinos have seen a huge rise in users and demand. For
these new sign-ups, many will see them both in the same light: an interesting space where
money can be won and time can be spent.
On top of this, both have undergone rapid innovation and accessibility. Many brokers have
developed apps that have a fast onboarding process, zero commission, and a jargon-free
user interface. Similarly, online casinos have also become easier to use, with lower
commissions, like with the ability to use cryptocurrency as the base currency.
Online casinos are looking to replace not only traditional casinos — places that have been
prohibited during social distance measures — but video games. The game development has
become more sophisticated where narratives, gamification and complex themes are
commonplace.
Likewise, stock exchanges have replaced the use of savings accounts. With incredibly lowinterest rates currently, and with a greater appetite for quick returns, Coronavirus has
been a mere opportunity for many amateur traders.
The biggest difference between the two is sustainability. In the event of a likely
Coronavirus-induced recession, the stock market may appear much less interesting. On the
other hand, online casinos have been growing long before this pandemic, and will likely
continue strengthening afterwards — particularly with traditional casinos struggling.
