Directions: Analyze and solve the following scientific problems using the three methods
of solving systems of two linear equations in two variables: elimination method,
substitution method, and graphing method.
1. A farmer has a total of 120 grams of fertilizer that has 10% nitrogen and some
that is 30% nitrogen. How much of each kind should be mixed together to
produce a fertilizer that is 21% nitrogen?
2. A chemist mix 30% acid and 50% acid solutions and produced 5 gallons of 40%
solution. How many liters of each were combined to produce the resulting
solution?
3. The distance from Manila to Baguio is 246 kilometers. However, the distance
from Manila to Urdaneta is three times the distance from Urdaneta to Baguio less
six kilometers. How far is Urdaneta from Manila? How far is Urdaneta from
Baguio?
4. You are flying 1500 miles. The trip to your destination takes 2.5 hours traveling
with the wind. The trip home takes 3 hours traveling against the wind. Find the
speed of the plane and the speed of the wind.
