1898 - Hull House, Chicago
1937 – origin of social work – India
1952 – Origin of Social Work in Tamil Nadu
1959 – Indian Conference on Social Work later to
Indian council for Social Welfare
1959 – Ebling Hersey, expert from American embassy(all schools
get together)
1959 – Form an association for schools (first meeting was held in Delhi
School of Social Work).

American professors sent to India

PL480 funds – to start a council on Social Work education with this
funding from American council for Social Work education.
Social Work as a Profession

1950 – First international UN Survey of Social Work education

1955 –Second international UN Survey of Social Work education

1958 - Third international UN Survey of Social Work education

1960 –University Grants Commission (UGC)

-First Review Committee for Social Work education

1965 - Fourth international UN Survey of Social Work Education

1975 - UGC - Second Review Committee for Social Work education.

1975 – Fifth international UN Survey of Social Work education

2001 – Third review Committee for Social Work Education

All the above initiatives were to establish the National Council for Social Work education
in India.

ROLE OF “COUNCIL”

It pursues this mission in higher education by setting and maintaining national
accreditation standards for baccalaureate and master’s degree programs in social
work,

by promoting faculty development,

by engaging in interprofessional and international collaborations, and

by advocating for social work education and research.
