Day 3
Fill in the blank food chain below using the information from the paragraph.
Grass is an example of a producer in a prairie ecosystem. A producer is an organism
that is able to make its own food through the process of photosynthesis. Many
different species of organisms feed on grasses in the prairie. A rabbit, for example, is
an herbivore. An herbivore is an organism that feeds only on plants. Rabbits obtain
a large amount of energy from grasses in the prairie. Since rabbits feed on grasses
they are considered primary consumers. A fox is considered an omnivore. An
omnivore is an organism that feeds on plants or other animals. Foxes have excellent
hearing and are able to sneak up on their prey. Foxes will feed on rabbits and a
large variety of other organisms.

1. Which organism is both a predator
and prey?
A. Grass
B. Beetle
C. Lizard
D. Hawk
Lizard

2. Which organism would be considered
an herbivore?
A. Grass
B. Beetle
C. Lizard
D. Hawk
Day 5
Create your own realistic food chain in the space provided below. Label the names
of the organisms. Also label each organism as a producer or consumer. Your food
chain must include at least 4 different organisms.

Food Chains Warm-Up
Day 1
Describe each of the following key vocabulary terms using your own words.
Food Chain - a series of events in which one organism eats another in order to
obtain energy
Producer - an organism that can make its own food through photosynthesis
Consumer - an organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms
Decomposer - an organism that breaks down waste and dead organisms
Day 2
Use the food chain below to answer questions 1 - 6.
Grass
Grasshopper
Mouse
Snake
1.
Which organism receives the most energy from the Sun? Grass
2.
Which organism receives the least amount of energy from the Sun? Snake
3.
List all of the producers. Grass
4.
List all of the consumers. Grasshopper, Mouse, Snake
5.
What do the arrows represent? The direction of the flow of energy.
6.
Many of the members of the grasshopper population suddenly die. How would
a significant decrease in the grasshopper population affect this food chain?
Explain your answer in detail.
Answer may vary. Mice will have less food to eat if there is a decline in the
grasshopper population. This will most likely have a negative impact on the mice
population as well. If the mice population declines the snake population will likely
decrease. Generally changing one aspect of a food chain can have a significant
impact on many other parts of the food chain.
