Childhood Development: Types of Attachment

The Strange Situation:
Secure Attachment
Describe: Secure attachment is classified by children who show some distress when
their caregiver leaves but are able to compose themselves knowing that their caregiver
will return
Example: Separates from parents.
Resistant Attachment
Describe: Resistant attachment relationships are characterized by exaggerated
expressions of attachment needs.
Example: In the presence of their caregiver these infants are reluctant to explore their
environment and preoccupied with getting the attention of their caregiver.
Avoidant Attachment
Describe: Avoidant attachment types are extremely independent, self-directed, and often
uncomfortable with intimacy.
Example: The parent may not even hear their baby when it starts to cry or learn their
baby's signals.
Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development
Directions: Discuss the first four stages of Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development with your group
and quickly describe each stage. Using your text and your reference sheets, choose characters (literary,
cartoon, movie, television, etc.) that have successfully met each stage, and characters that have not
successfully met each stage. Then, justify your choice by providing evidence of how their behavior
matches what you have learned from your references.
