It’s a common misconception that all students who are involved in the making of school paper are dead
set on a career in journalism. While this may be true in some cases, joining campus journalism is a
worthwhile experience that will give you a leg up in the future. It will not only give you journalism
experience or a voice but you can also learn invaluable skills and benefits that will prepare you for a range
of career path.
Joining the campus journalism may seem daunting to those without prior journalism experience, but it’s
actually the perfect way for you to develop your writing abilities that will serve as your edge from other
students. It will sharpen your writing tone, buff up your vocabulary and give you the confidence to write
in any style- like for instance, doing research papers. This means that you will be able to adjust to different
writing environment faster than those who don’t have the opportunity to experience it firsthand. Also,
the ability to communicate is a vital skill in any workplace environment and writing helps develop that
skill.
Another thing about joining campus journalism is that you can get involved more on the campus but can
become even more involved by going to other ground events to cover them for stories. You will have more
opportunities to meet people of varying backgrounds and get to know your schoolmates and faculty
better. More so, you will be always be up to date with all the campus and community events.
Likewise, through campus journalism you can join press conferences and compete in the division or even
bear the name of the province by contending in the regional and national level.
On the other hand, being a staffer of the school publication can be stressful especially when the deadline
of submission of articles comes inches closer and you’re still struggling to come up with a catchy lead or a
snappy headline. You’ll spend long hours writing and editing while also sometimes being frustrated for
having writer’s block, taking you hours staring at your laptop or paper while playing with your pen. But
for the most part it doesn’t really feel like work or a burden at all- BISUMI X-Press is a ‘home away from
home’ in high school that so many students struggle to find one.
While many of us, the current staffers, wish that we could write for the school paper forever and
continuously upgrade every issue of it, it is important to recognize that our time in high school is limited
and that we will likely soon leave for the greater good of our endeavors. But rest assured that when we
come to an end of our high school life, we’ll hopefully have a ton of bylines and experience to take with
us and the family we created as a whole staff will never shatter.
Now, my dear fellow students, let me instill in your hearts and minds that campus journalism isn’t just for
someone who wants to pursue journalism studies nor for top achievers and earning extra-curricular
thingy rather our organization welcomes anyone as long as you have the passion for writing and the
willingness to share then you have a place here. The BISUMI X-Press -our family, humbly welcome every
interested writers. Be part us and leave your legacy through your PEN!
