Since it is the first discussion post, it is mainly about the meaning of the development concept from the first unit covered in the course. The topics will be posted to MYLS. Students are required to make two postings: One original post in the topic and one response to a posting. This posting is supporting the material on module one. The development of economies around the world is a long-lasting battle. However, there is progress that is being shown in today’s world for instance, the global poverty population fell from two fifths back in 1990 to one-fifth today. Development economies are trying to help lead developing economies into conditions that can help better the lives of the countries residents. While doing so, the term definition of development has been redefined to eliminating the poverty, inequality and unemployment within a growing country. Only by doing so can a lesser developed country truly claim to be a developed country. Amartya Sen’s argument that the “capability to function” is what divides the poor and non-poor person is a great perspective in the matter. The capabilities of people and humans is the root to moving towards greater economic development, without capable humans it wouldn’t be possible. By being able to take your commodities such as books and being literate enough to read and retain that knowledge; it is possible to teach and distribute it, thus building a larger base of capable humans for the cause. Governments are ruled by capable people, if it weren’t for them and other great capable figures the rulings of this world could have followed a different path. A good example would be the law, if capable people were not the ones in charge of upholding the law, then violence would be more prominent. This is already happening in lesser and under developed countries, unlike the developed countries we live in, it is more unlikely to have peaceful, worriless days. Furthermore, with relevance to the core values of development, those who have higher income become freer and have higher self-esteem. They also are worry free with their lifestyle as they have basic needs covered, thus avoiding absolute underdevelopment. I believe that the meaning of the development concept and the development of countries is related to the capabilities of the countries and their residents. By following the three development objectives, countries can up rise from the status of poor to wealthy. For this to happen, it needs to be easier for the people to have access to basic needs, well-paying jobs as well as more economic and social choices.
