Current Events News Assignment in Science
Find an earth science article, either online, or in a newspaper or magazine. You must find an
article that is relevant to our topics of chemistry, biology, physics or astronomy, topics that will
be covered in the next few weeks OR you may use something that is relevant to the larger
inquiry project that you will complete as part of this course.
Here are some kinds of topics that you might find:
● Developing and testing vaccines
● New species of organism discovered or rare species sighted
● Scientists discover a new planet/star/black hole
Where can you look? Here are a few ideas.
● Scientific journals or any university publications
● Reputable newspaper publications (local or national) like the National, Globe and Mail,
Times Colonist, CBC
● Online news sites like ​livescience.com, sciencedaily.com, sciencenews.org,
sciencemag.org, sciencenewsforstudents.org
● Magazines like TIME, MacLeans, Discovery, Canadian Living, National Geographic,
Canadian Geographic
● Google scholar
What must you do?
Submit a typed or written document (1-2 pages) or an artistic representation (discuss with
teacher if chosen) that includes the following information:
1. Name of Article
2. Source of publication (include title of source as well as publisher information, and URL if
from the internet). I need to be able to find the article.
3. Date of article
4. Summary of what the article is discussing. Do not forget to include the “who”, “what”,
“where”, “why” and “when”!
5. Your opinion on the importance and relevance of this article. Consider why you chose
this article, why it is important to share with others?
Finally, post a link to your publication on the class Padlet.
