MOST COMMON LABORATORY APPARATUS
BURETS – Acid buret and base buret are for
addition of a precise volume of liquid. The
volume of liquid added can be determined to the
nearest 0.01 ml with practice.
PIPET – is used for measuring small volume of
liquid direct from the reagent bottle.
CONDENSER – is used in distillation to cool the
hot vapors, condensing them into liquid for
separate collection.
THERMOMETER – is a device that measures
temperature or temperature gradient using a
variety of different principles.
THISTLE TUBE – is used to add liquids or
sometimes to other pieces of equipment.

SEPARATORY FUNNEL – is used in liquid-liquid
extractions to separate the components of a
mixture between two immiscible solvent phases

GAS CYLINDER – is a pressure vessel used to
store gases at above atmospheric pressure.
SPECTROPHOTOMETER – is used to measure
the absorbance or transmittance of a liquid
sample.
CRUCIBLE – is a vessel for heating or melting
substances
requiring
extreme heat
and
temperature.
PETRI DISH – is a shallow glass or plastic
cylindrical lidded dish that biologist use to
culture cells or small moss plants.
GLASS FUNNEL – is a cone-shaped vessel
ending in a tube at the base, used for pouring
liquids or powders through a small opening, and
to hold the filter paper in filtration.
BEAKER – is a deep, wide mouthed, thin-walled,
cylindrical vessel with a pouring lip used for
measuring, stirring, mixing and heating liquids.

large quantity of volatile liquid and used in
analytical chemistry to produce accurate
solutions.
GALVANOMETER – is used to determine the
presence, direction, and strength of an electric
current in a conductor.
ASPIRATOR – Is used for cleaning the pans of
the different types of balances and used in
getting liquid by means of a measuring pipets.

large quantity of liquid; used as a receiver in
titration and distillation; used as a container for
liquid samples.

with a sidearm for conveying filtered liquid into
other vessels.
SPECIFIC GRAVITY BOTTLE – is a special type
of bottle used to measure specific gravity of a
material.

amount of solution or reagents.
REAGENT BOTTLE – is a vessel used to contain
chemicals use to bring about a chemical
reaction with another substance for separating
mixtures.
SPATULA – is a various small implement with a
broad, flat, flexible blade.
WATCH GLASS – is a crystal used for observing
small amount of samples undergoing reaction or
as a cover for a beaker.

EVAPORATING DISH – is a laboratory device for
evaporation of solids and supernatant fluids,
and sometimes to their melting point.

grinding solid substances into powder form.

to a ring stand as a support for a funnel,
crucible, or evaporating dish.

a long, downward-pointing outlet tube. It is used
for distillation or decomposition by heat.
FLORENCE FLASK (Round-bottom Flask) – is
designed for uniform heating and ease of
swirling. It need support to stand upright.
FLORENCE FLASK (Flat-bottom Flask) – is used
to keep a liquid or solid on the flat surfaces for
studying purpose.
WASH BOTTLE – is used for washing the inner
sides of the apparatus like tube or flask where
the chemicals that undergo reaction are placed.
GRADUATED CYLINDER – is a piece of
laboratory glassware used to accurately
measure the volume of liquid. It is also known as
a measuring cylinder.

“U” which can be used as a manometer – used in
measuring the pressure of liquids.
DRYING TUBES – is used for hydration of
calcium chloride and can serve as a funnel.
EXTRACTION TUBE – is used to extract a
substance from the mixture or solution
TEST TUBE – is a glass tube closed at one end
used in making chemical tests; used for heating
small amount of solution in experiments.
TRIPOD – is a stand or support with three legs
that is often used to place above the Bunsen
burner in the science lab to heat/boil anything.

BUNSEN BURNER – is a laboratory equipment
that produces a single open gas flame, which is
used for heating, sterilization, and combustion.
RING STAND WITH RINGS – are used for holding
pieces of glassware in place.
TEST TUBE RACK – is a framework of wooden or
metal bars used for supporting the test tubes
LABORATORY JACK – is made mostly of steel; it
is quite sturdy and can support 50lbs. under
normal use. It allows for coarse adjustment of
height only
HOT PLATE – can also be used as sources of
heat when an open flame is not desirable.
CENTRIFUGE – is used to separate contained
materials of different specific gravities, or to
separate colloidal particles suspend in a liquid.

nylon bristles attached to a twisted-wire shaft,
used to knock the bottoms out of test tubes.
TEST TUBE HOLDER – is a metal wire used to
hold or support test tubes containing chemicals
waiting for further operations
TONG – is used in holding hot materials or
apparatus

MICROSCOPE – is an optical instrument that
uses a lense to produce magnified images of
objects too small to be seen by the unaided eye.
