Mixtures
•
A mixture is a _____________1_______ of two or more ___________2_______ that are not
chemically __________3_________________.
•
Mixtures can be ____________4_____________, such as mechanical mixtures and suspensions,
or ________________5___________, such as solutions and colloids.
Mechanical Mixtures
•
Mechanical mixtures are classified as _________6_______________, meaning the particles are
not evenly distributed or combined.
•
The different substances that make up the mixture can be _____7________ and separated by
_____8_____________.
•
Examples include: __________________9________________________________
Suspensions
•
Like mechanical mixtures, suspensions are ______10___________________________.
•
The different substances that make up the mixture will not ____________11___________, they
are ______________12____________.
•
Particles are so large that they _____________13__________ unless the mixture is constantly
________________14____________.
•
Examples include: __________________________15_________________________
Solutions
•
Classified as __________16_______________, meaning the particles are evenly distributed
throughout the mixture.
•
These are formed when one or more ___________17_________ dissolve into a
______________18_________.
•
Examples include: ______________________19_____________________________
Colloids
•
Like solutions, they are classified as __________20______________________.
•
Particles are spread throughout, but are not _____21_________ enough to settle out.
•
Particles can’t be __________22________ by a filter.
•
Colloids often appear ______23____________.
•
Examples include: ________________24___________________________________
Pure Substances
•
Pure substances contain only ____25_____ type of _______26____________.
•
Can be separated into ________27________ and ______28_____________.
Elements
•
Elements are ____29________ substances made of only one type of ________30________.
•
Can not be _______________________31__________________into simpler substances under
______________32_______ lab conditions.
•
Examples include: _____________33_____________________________________
Compounds
•
Compounds are ____________34_______________made of atoms of two or more elements
that are _________________35_________ combined.
•
Compounds are ___________36______________ and different from the
________37__________ they contain.
