Alien Food Web Activity
You are a space biologist on a research mission to the planet Xenon 9. Your job is to
study the life forms that you encounter on this planet and describe their ecology.
There are 15 different organisms that you have found and named (see table below)
Alien Organisms - Table 1
Klunplack
Wheshkor
Gilch
Lanko
Bort
Tarkel
Borlund
Sqoob
Ackabee
Marp
Clopatid
Peemo
Plenk
Tagolunk
Foopoplat
As a good scientist you record the following observations about these organisms:
● Clopatid eats tagolunk
● Sqoob eats ackabee
● Glich eats ackabee
● Peemo eats tagolunk
● Sqoob eats marp
● Glich eats peemo
● Peemo eats foopoplat
● Sqoob eats peemo
● Wheshkor eats glitch
● Plenk eats foopoplat
● Bort eats sqoob
● Wheshkor eats bort
● Marp eats plenk
● Bort eats marp
● Wheshkor eats lanko
● Marp eatsfoopoplat
● Bort eats ackabee
● Wheshkor eats ackabee
● Borlund eats plenk
● Tarkel eats sqoob
● Klunplack eats glitch
● Borlund eats peemo
● Tarkel eats borlund
● Klunplack eats lanko
● Borlund eats clopatid
● Tarkel eats borlund
● Klunplack eats tarkel
● Ackabee eats peemo
● Lanko eats ackabee
● Klunplack eats bort
● Ackabee eats clopatid
● Glich eats lanko
● Klunplack eats borlund
You also notice that both Foopoplat and Tagolunk do not physically eat and seem to generate their
own energy without consuming other organisms.
HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:
1. Using these observations, on a separate sheet of paper create a FOOD WEB showing the
trophic (feeding) relationships between each organism on Xenon 9. Make sure you observe
the following two rules:
RULE 1 - Arrows point FROM the organism being eaten TO to organism doing the
eating.
RULE 2 - Organisms in the lower trophic levels should be below organisms in the
lighter trophic levels so all the arrows should point upward)
THINK of all the different types of trophic levels: Producers (autotrophs), herbivores
(heterotroph/primary consumers), carnivores (heterotroph, secondary consumers, tertiary
consumers and apex predators).
2. Once you’ve created your food web, answer the following questions AS A TEXT ENTRY in
Canvas.
a. Identify one autotroph
b. Identify one heterotroph
c. Identify one herbivore
d. Identify one carnivore
e. Identify two primary producers
f. Identify two primary consumers
g. Identify two secondary consumers
h. Identify one 3rd level consumer
i. Identify one apex predator
j. Identify one organism that is an omnivore.
Your food web should look something
like this example!
A picture of your food web and answers to #2 is
what your will be submitting to Canvas
