The Non-verbal Communication

PARA-LANGUAGE:
 The term Para-language is combination of two words:
PARA means “Like”
AND
LANGUAGE means “Mode of language”
Thus, Para-language literally means “Like language”.
DEFINITION
Paralanguage is nonverbal communication such as your tone,
pitch, manner of speaking, volume and gesture.
“ NOT ONLY WHAT YOU
SAY, BUT HOW YOU SAY
IS ALSO MATTERS”
PARA-LANGUAGE CONSIST
OF:
 RATE: How fast or slow you are speaking.
 PITCH: How high or low the sounds of your voice are
 VOLUME: How loudly or softly you are speaking.
 VOICE QUALITY: What makes people able to recognize you by
your voice alone
 PRONUNCIATION: the way in which a word pronounced.
 PAUSE: It is short silence flanked by words.

ON PHY SICAL FEATURES OF
SPOKEN LANGUAGE, SUCH AS
FACIAL EXPRESSIONS -LIKE A
SMIRK, OR
GESTURES- LIKE POINTING.

ARE ROOTED IN VOCAL
ELEMENTS- LIKE
VOICED PAUSES SUCH AS
‘UM’ OR ‘HMM’ OR
INTONATION.

 No oral communication is complete without Para-language.
 A speaker education and background can be judged from his way
of speaking.
 Knowledge of person’s Para-language by listening to good
speakers.
 One can improve his Para-language by listening to good speakers.
DISADVANTAGES OF
PARALANGUAGE
 Unless the listener is open minded, it may prejudice him.
 As speakers belong to different speech communities,
uniformity becomes difficult.
