Totally Free Summary
This assignment is late because I mistakenly submitted it into the class activities page for the
day instead of the actual assignment submission.
The passage "Totally Free" asks what is true freedom, not just to an individual, but to a civil
society. It defines total freedom as the ability to do whatever one wants regardless of legality or
how it affects the freedoms of others. It goes on to describe freedom as most know it, freedom
to live as an individual in a society; this type of freedom really only includes the freedom of
speech as everything else is partially regulated by a government. For example, you are free to
pursue happiness as long as it does not impede others from pursuing their own. So you
couldn't go around stealing, or assaulting others just because it is your own freedom to do so,
the fact that it violates the freedom of someone else makes it wrong in the bigger picture.

According to the first amendment, the government is not to punish people for their
speech, religion, or expression. It also forbids the government from silencing the press.
