Velocity Practice Problems
Solve the following problems relating to velocity using the following formula. Show your work
and include the correct unit. Distance (m), time (s), velocity (m/s).
Average Velocity/Speed = Total Distance / Total Time
v = d/t
Ex. 1.) This
skier traverses
the 200 m width
of an alpine
glacier in 12 s. Calculate
their average velocity.
v = d/t
v = 200 / 12
v = 16.7 m/s
Ex. 2.) How long will it take
Ex. 3.)
this swimmer to swim a 50 m Formula 1
race traveling at 2.3 m/s?
cars c an move at over 200
mph (~90 m/s). How much
distance could one cover
moving at 90 m/s for 30 s?
v = d/t
2.3 = 50 / t
v = d/t
(t) (t)
90 = d/30
2.3t = 50
(30) (30)
/2.3 /2.3
d = 2,700 m or 2.7 km
t = 21.7 s
1.) This runner
averages 1 mile
(1,609 m) in 7
minutes. Calculate
her velocity in m/s.
2.) This battle
robot’s top
speed is 0.3
m/s. How long
will it take it to walk 12 m?
3.) How high
will this RC
helicopter go
in 8 seconds
with an average vertical
speed of 3.4 m/s?
4.) A sloth can
move at 0.15 mph
(0.07 m/s) when
moving at top
speed. How long would it
take a sloth to “run” a 100 m
dash?
5.) How far
could this
dinosaur
travel in 20
seconds if its average
velocity is 4.7 m/s?
6.) Mike the mic
can run 10 m in
7.4 seconds.
Calculate Mike’s
velocity.

7 min x 60 s/min = 420 s
v = d/t
v = 1,609/420 s
v = 3.83 m/s
v = d/t
0.3 = 12 / t
(t) (t)
0.3t = 12
/0.3 /0.3
t = 40 s

v = d/t
0.07 = 100 / t
(t) (t)
0.07t = 100
/0.07 /0.07
t = 1,428 s or 23.8 min
v = d/t
4.7 = d / 20
(20) (20)
d = 94 m
v = d/t
v = 10 / 7.4
v = 1.35 m/s
v = d/t
3.4 = d / 8
(8) (8)
d = 27.2 m
