1. Introduction:

English is a compulsory subject in Vietnamese education system, teaching English for
high school students help them use English as a basic communication tool in the form
of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Having general knowledge about the people
and cultures of some English-speaking countries, from which there are good feelings
and attitudes towards them. Reading comprehension usually accounts for fourty percent
of the total score on the tests, semester exams, high school graduation exams and
university entrance exams. To create the quality in language learning and teaching,
materials play an important role to create an effective educational environment (Núñez
& Téllez, 2008). Testing is a way of collecting evidence about learners' progress and
response to the teaching learning process. Chi Lang is one of the biggest high school in
Da Lat city. Each year, this school has over one thousand students who are good at
various subjects, such as mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology, but their four
English skills are not good enough. To create the quality in language learning and
teaching, materials play an important role to create an effective educational
environment. Some teachers argue that textbooks do not meet the expectations of both
teachers and learners (Núñez & Téllez, 2008). This article describes the process of
designing a reading comprehension test based on a textbook program for grade 12
students at Chi Lang High School. The purpose of this test is to identify students'
strengths and weaknesses in reading comprehension. In addition, to assess their ability
to grasp the gist, understand details, find specific information, guess the meaning of
lexical items in context and to draw inferences from a text. This test is carried out at the
end of the first semester in order for the teacher to have a clearer understanding of
students' reading abilities and take suitable curative steps to treat their weaknesses for
the second semester. Reading is one the most important language skills as it is used
quite often not only for everyday life, but also for academic purposes. Lopera (2012)
defines reading as "an interactive process in which the writer and the reader dialog
through a text" (p. 81). The reader has to interpret the 4 message posited by the writer
and they both have to create coherent meaning. Lopera (2014, p. 90) supports that the
reader needs to possess certain elements in order to understand the text: linguistic
knowledge, background knowledge, and cognitive processes. There are thirty-five
students of a grade 12 who need to develop and extend their English and get good results
on school tests. They have 3 English classes a week, each lasting 45 minutes. This
course is the entire program of the first semester starting from early September to early
December. It covers 7 units in 14 weeks. English textbook 12 is compiled under the
High School English Program of the Ministry of Education and Training on the theme
of 16 units of lessons and 6 reviews. Each unit revolves around a certain topic such as
family, friends, job, environment. The content of each Unit focuses on Grammar and
Vocabulary with Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing and Language Focus sections.

đương 75% của bài kiểm tra), khác với trước đây giáo viên thiết kế thang điểm 10 cho bài kiểm tra Nghe,
Đọc, Viết. Như vậy giáo viên sẽ phải tổ chức kiểm tra nói để hoàn thành bài kiểm tra với thang điểm 10.

3. Justification on the use and selection of all the materials and situations used
in the test sườn + Phương
I selected the first passage from Refinery29 which is a popular online magazine for
teens. This is a place where they can search for news on fashion, styles, trends,
entertainment, hot events from a multi-dimensional perspective. The language used
by the writer is very easy to understand, and informal. The rest passages are selected
from the website named English Online: Articles in Easy Understandable English
for Learners which is specially designed for English learners. The articles are
carefully selected and rewritten again, so they are much easier to understand. And
in particular three passages have content and format appropriate for grade 12
students' reading competence. In terms of content, all three readings are relevant for
students' background knowledge. The content of three passages refers to fashion,
important events and human emotions giving students knowledge of history,
geography, culture and science and making students excited to read the information
in the texts. Formally, these three documents are in length appropriate for the final
exam of high school students. They are long enough for students to answer 20
questions in 30 minutes.
I asked students to take this test to revise for the final exam of the first semester and
to detect students' strengths and weaknesses in reading. I found that students
complete well. At first, they tried to complete the test and did not skip any questions,
which showed that the length of the test is completely suitable for students to read.
They also commented that the test content was quite interesting; the content attracted
them to read all the information instead of getting bored with the text with too many
words like before.
In conclusion, I selected these three texts because of their appropriate length and
content. Besides, the language of the text is quite suitable for the ability of grade 12
students to understand. This test can assess students' reading comprehension ability,
especially that students can apply vocabulary keys and grammar rules they were
taught to take the comprehension test.
